just to start some new topic in the absence of on the field action, I was looking back at Offalys journey in 1985 and not being biased but how Jim Troy didnt get an All Star that year has always been a topic of conversation around Offaly and his club Lusmagh, without "googling" I think Ger Cunningham of Cork got the nod ahead of Jim that year, no shame in finishing second to the Great Ger I know...Brian Whelehans ommission in 1994 was another which raised eyebrows, I will qualify that though and say that Limerick had Dave Clark on top form that year too, and Kevin Martin was outstanding as was Hubert Rigney, so I suppose Ger Hegarty will have felt aggrived from a Limerick point of view as he was outstanding that year for Limerick at CB...feel free to move around the years with your views and oppinions.. John Galvin in 2010 roasted Anthony Maher in the Munster final and roasted Aidan Walsh in the qualifiers in the Gaelic Rounds but Walsh got the all star. DUALSUPPORT (Limerick) - Posts: 1038 - 11/02/2021 12:51:58 2331035 Link 1 |
From a Laois point of view: Ben (None) - Posts: 101 - 11/02/2021 12:55:00 2331036 Link 0 |
All great players. Could it be the fact they played for Laois, who don't reach the finals of the hurling and football championships?

I find it very hard to fathom how Kevin Mcloughlin has never received an All-Star for Mayo. Consistency personified. Tizcold (Galway) - Posts: 239 - 11/02/2021 14:46:36 2331051 Link 1 |
John Galvin got the midfield place on the players team that year but not on the Journalists etc team. He was the only player, who was not on the All Stars team, thus nominated. Stephen Lucey absolutely destroyed Kevin Donaghy that day, as he did to so many other good footballers, but nothing doing either. I have lost respect for how these awards are given and do not agree with the idea that an All Ireland team has to automatically have six or seven All Stars, while great players from weaker counties are not even considered.

Perhaps the greatest travesty to have ever happened in the all star era. And that is saying something.

I take it that is not meant as a smart answer as Laois not getting to finals:)..I actually remember that game Niall RIgney played in against Laois, and from memory Kilkenny stole it in the last few minutes. Just to clarify there was a back door of some description I think (was it it beaten provincial finalists maybe I think) but just one additional game in those days...to agrree with MicktheMiller, though, no more than loads of top class players, not reaching latter stages seems to be the yardstick (unfairly too I think)...

Slightly off topic but I reckon Kevin McManamon is surely one of the most influential players never honoured with an all star. Had a big say in some of Dublin's All Ireland wins and probably a couple we would not have won without him, the super-sub role maybe is not recognised for it's true value. sligo joe (Dublin) - Posts: 686 - 11/02/2021 16:46:00 2331081 Link 1 |
Paddy Keean was one of the best footballers I ever seen, Dublin/Kerry/Mayo/Tyrone I dont care, Paddy Keenan was gifted...David Reilly I think was another outstanding forward, not to mention Colin Kelly...one of the best ever..Louth have had more, I know...Stefan White and they had an exception half back too around the time of Kelly/Reilly and the Hanlons..his name escapes me..an excellent player...

excellently put, Limerick have had several excellent footballers over the years..Ian Ryan is another, and ye had an excellent forward too before him for many years...his name escapes me..

I have to agree with you. Maybe because of his supersub role he was never considered properly. A brilliant footballer for Dublin. Solid as a rock and always delivered. I remember Connolly was put off v Donegal in semi 2011 and appealed to play in final. When I heard he won appeal I was delighted( in a selfish way) as I did nt want Kevin Mac to start as he was the one Dub player I was terrified of as he ran at defenses. Altho I was a massive admirer of Connolly s silken skills I feared Kevin. He did nt start but when he came on he broke Kerry hearts and the rest was history. Also anytime he started he was always a thorn in the oppositions side. Very unlucky not to get an all star.

The man you are thinking of is Stephen Kelly from Newcastle.

Donnacha O Connor should have got one in 2010. From a Cork prospective it's a complete robbery Donnacha never got at least one all star during his career. pkboher (Cork) - Posts: 49 - 12/02/2021 07:59:54 2331148 Link 0 |
Agreed - never a Dub fan but Kevin Mac is one of my favourite players of the last 20 years. Always a buzz when he came on the field.

Did your (Corks) Patrick Kelly ever get an allstar?...he was a nifty wing forward, didnt have a long intercounty career but was a class act on any given day..I am amazed Donnacha O'Connor never got one myself...didnt know he didnt until you posted it...a fine corner forward he was..a great free taker too wasnt he...
