Like some of those picks there alright Mick ;) I'd have to find room for a couple of guys in a Dublin team. Again I'm not saying this is the best to ever play for Dublin but who I'd pick. J O'Leary, M Deegan, G Hargan, M Kennedy, J McCarthy, K Barr, J McCaffrey, B Fenton, C Whelan, P Curran, C Kilkenny, C Redmond, B Brogan, D Rock, P Mannion Probably shows my love of the ding dong battles of the late 80's and early ninties there. Had to find a place for Paul Curran in there somewhere. I know people won't agree with a lot of that team but its only my opinion on things. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1954 - 19/02/2021 13:01:06 2331999 Link 11 |
Fair play Mick.

Surely you'd have to Martin Gavigan at 6.. Old style but nothing went down the middle. For me he was in the Moyhihan category when it came to centre half backs..

brian mullins and brian fenton were the 2 best dubs midfielders in my opinion . fenton must ranked among the all time greats

Mayo All-Star team; Clarke Mortimer Caffrekey, Higgins Keegan Nallen Boyle Padden McHale O'Neill McDonald Horan O'Connor Moran McGrath Players in positions they won their awards. Moving them around I'd have Durcan for Boyler(close) and Dillon for O'Neill. I'd have McLoughlin in ahead of any of my wing forwards but somehow he didn't win any all-star, he should be a multi-award winner. Cahill for Caff too at full-back IMO. matdon (Mayo) - Posts: 8 - 19/02/2021 13:48:10 2332007 Link 1 |
Yeah Rambo was an animal! Played very well for Ireland in the International Rules as well.

I struggled to leave out Curran myself Brian. It's hard to pick best 15.

I would have Kevin McStay in corner forward.

For sure Mick, and especially when its not your own county. My father and Noel Curran (Paul's dad) started bar work in Dublin at the same time in the 50's and were on great terms over the years so that probably swung it for Paul. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1954 - 19/02/2021 15:18:42 2332027 Link 10 |
Matdon, might be a stupid question or obvious.. who's the McGrath in the corner. Don't remember that name at all for Mayo football, but maybe i'm stupid. Pat holmes is another name i remember as a great player in the late 90's and no conor mortimer must've been another close call...

Lol. Besides the loyalty Brian Paul Curran was a great footballer and could play anywhere.

Ford did not win an Allstar and in an best side, regardless of allstard, I'd rate Cahill the best. McStay won his allstar at left-corner, can't put him ahead of Cillian. As for Joe McGrath, he was a fantastic, explosive goal-scoring corner forward. He took 1980 and 1982 all-star, the great Harry Keegan from Roscommon, for 2-5 from play in 1981, on a losing Mayo side. He was up with Mickey Sheehy and Matt Connor as a leading scorer dispite playing on a weak Mayo team and not taking regular frees. A great player. Noel Durcan was the one I agonised most about, V James Horan. matdon (Mayo) - Posts: 8 - 19/02/2021 20:12:40 2332060 Link 0 |
Joe McGrath, 1979 AS. Very good freetaker, but don't remember him being too fantastic from general play.

This is the best 15 Dublin players that I've seen play. Except for Connolly, who was too good to leave out, it's according to positions. These are players that I've seen play. Cluxton Diarmuid Connolly Ciaran O'Sullivan Robbie Kelleher Tommy Drumm James McCarthy Jack McCaffrey Brian Mullins Brian Fenton Anton O'Toole Ciaran Kilkenny Paul Flynn Con O'Callaghan Jimmy Keaveny Alan Brogan It was very hard to leave out John O'Leary, Paul Curran, Brian Howard, Kevin Moran and both Bernard Brogans. And I could not entertain the notion of picking a Dublin team without the one and only Jimmy Keaveny. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1926 - 20/02/2021 00:15:07 2332097 Link 0 |
Sean O'Neill has to be at full-forward befair (Down) - Posts: 237 - 20/02/2021 19:46:50 2332181 Link 0 |
You know, Joe McKenna would be a better option than Joe Canning at no. 14. But that'd be a toss of the coin pick. Other than that, it's hard to argue with chosen 15.

Well Forever I know you ve good Limerick blood on you but for me I could have Joe Mac before Canning. If I was to have big Joe Mac in the team it would be another player to lose out but definately not Joe Canning.
