Looking at the all star nominations,I see James McCarthy nominated at midfield and galligan as a forward.does this rule both out of a chance of an award?dont see galligan being in the top 6 forwards.with Fenton a definite is McCarthy going to get 2nd midfielder? Doesn't rule anything out. Howard was nominated as a forward last year and picked at 6, Colm Cavanagh at midfield in 2018 (i think) and picked at 3. They can and will shuffle the deck chairs and i'd fully expect Mccarthy is selected at 5 or 6 and Galligan goes to midfield with Fenton when the team is announced. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1954 - 15/01/2021 10:38:26 2327522 Link 11 |
I grew up in the 80's and 90's myself. Heady days indeed for Meath football. As a child I used to marvel at all the green and yellow fertiliser bags stapled to the telegraph poles round Meath. (And we're supposed to be the mean ones lol) That's gone now unfortunately. To say there's no rivalry with Cavan around Moynalty, K'wood, Oldcastle,Kells is not true. I mean the craic does be good and a bit of slagging goes on. I'd call that rivalry. There was a great atmosphere at the qualifier match in Clones in 2005 I think it was. Your wife got one up on you that day lol I'm not sure if your rivalry with Dublin is going to come back anytime soon. The Leinster championship is on life support at this stage unfortunately. thegadfly (Cavan) - Posts: 290 - 15/01/2021 22:21:12 2327655 Link 0 |
Mate, I'm from Kells. And to say there's no rivalry is correct, because there isn't one. Yes there's good natured humour and banter, but there's no rivalry. Games between Cavan and Meath have been so infrequent that it rules out any kind of rivalry. Last met in the championship on 2005 as you say and probably the early 50's before that. That does not a rivlary make. I'm guessing you probably work in Wellmans in Mullagh right on the border. If you do, I know why you might think theirs a rivalry as you've probably been on the end of and dished out plenty of abuse in your time. Cavan's main rivalry has been and always will be with Monaghan, a team you'd play regularly in the Ulster championship. Our rivalry is with Dublin, always has been and always will been no matter how much they are beating us bu now in games. Nothing stirs a Meath man's passion more than the sight of the navy and sky blue jersey of Dublin. I'm sure most dubs of a similar vintage would agree about the green and gold. And yes the wife has given me plenty of slagging about 2005, but she's now wholly converted and wears the green and gold, goes to Meath matches and is more likely to scream hon the royal than c'mon Cavan. not to say she didn't enjoy the Ulster win this season though ;) brian (Meath) - Posts: 1954 - 18/01/2021 09:52:32 2327878 Link 9 |
I suppose it depends on how you perceive the word rivalry. I take your point though. We do share a substantial border though and with Meath being in Leinster and us Ulster I think that adds to it too. The atmosphere at the league matches does be quite good imo. thegadfly (Cavan) - Posts: 290 - 20/01/2021 21:26:16 2328264 Link 2 |

Love this. Its the great thing about our games is that we can gloat in private and generally people will be ok with it. Hopefully the tide will turn soon arock.... With a name like that and a Royal wife.... you must be of the famous Rock clan of Barney and Dean of Meath stock..... are you sure you're not Meath yourself ;) brian (Meath) - Posts: 1954 - 03/03/2021 13:00:36 2333401 Link 5 |
