I have followed my county for well over fifty years and have always enjoyed a drink before and/or after games. However I viewed all the games in my sitting room this year. The Gardai had a fair idea where pubs were open and should have have been informed of such transgressions by civic minded people anyway. Their was penalties in place for pubs that broke the law- why were they not applied?, if pubs were open. Why should responsible people, of which there were tens of thousands have to suffer, when a relatively small number of selfish fans and publicans could not conduct themselves.

There is no talking to the current breed of unionist politician. Jim Allister, Sammy Wilson etc are absolute nut jobs. Then you have dangerous loyalist cheerleaders like Jamie Bryson cheering Stone being released from prison. To offer balance, SF are wrong to bring up border polls every day. The aim here is to convince these people and join together to defeat this common enemy (the virus) and not alienate unionists about a politically United Ireland. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11227 - 27/01/2021 18:16:38 2329200 Link 4 |
Agree with you Oldtourman, I enjoyed last years football , both club and county. No reason why it can't happen again with so many TVs stations getting on board. Soccer and rugby are playing away. GAA went above and beyond themselves last year.

I disagree. The GAA are not responsible for what people do at home or away from their stadiums. GAA as reported today in the media is still Ireland's most popular sport by some distance. Other sports continued last summer and it was only right GAA teams and members were given the chance to play if for mental health reasons only. The GAA is the heart and soul of the vast majority of Irish communities. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11227 - 27/01/2021 19:13:51 2329209 Link 5 |
Nail on head about the dinosaurs your talking about and that trouble maker Bryson. Allister on Nolan show this morning and you could actually hear the fear in his voice about the prospect of a united Ireland, and to make it worse for them it was them who brought it closer. Sinn Féin just need to bide their time, make no stupid blunders like funerals and the like and get on with daily politics and sit back and enjoy.

That simple yeah?

What exactly is your definition of "United"?

But SF aren't biding their time. Calling for border polls and stupid gaffes like the Storey funeral prove that. They have shown no indication they are ready to govern or would do any better down here either which is amazing considering how inept FFG have been lately.

The DUP won't change their view. Its unfortunate in a pandemic their can't be an agreement. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2763 - 28/01/2021 09:41:38 2329279 Link 0 |
I mentioned their mistakes and blunders.

I would guess it's the same as yours.

Exactly. The real issue, and elephant in the room is Ireland's attitude to drink. Something cannot be celebrated properly unless there's a good drinking session. Now I'm the first to admit that I used to love nothing better than going for pints after a good Championship win but that was a conscious decision by me, not influenced by the GAA. I don't see how the GAA can be blamed for a societal issue such as this. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9108 - 28/01/2021 11:42:32 2329295 Link 0 |
If those actions in celebrating victories etc are from what happened in GAA stadiums etc then the GAA is at least partially responsible. Would teams/groups of people be celebrating together if they hadnt played together/won something. Most likely not. Other sports did continue but how many had mass gatherings in celebrating victories like some GAA clubs? KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3494 - 28/01/2021 12:11:00 2329305 Link 0 |
Liverpool did. Here in Ireland a few league of Ireland victories or pro 12 games were never going to draw out crowds afterwards but if Ireland has qualified for euro 2021 and got to a final or something or if our rugby team had done really well at a world cup it would have brought out crowds imo. We are talking about the pandemic. Talking about ireland and euro 21 and a rugby world cup is completely irrelevant as they wont happen. Ireland are not in euro2021 and by time rugby world cup is on this will be over and all will be vacinated. KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3494 - 28/01/2021 13:01:46 2329316 Link 0 |
Missing my point. The reason other sports didn't induce gatherings is because nothing significant happened in them during the year,, if they did,, they would have created gatherings. And what mass gatherings are you talking about anyway? I know we love in an age where exaggeration has all but become a virtue but define "mass gathering".
