Should Referees Be Asked To Explain

I just wonder would it help to clear matters up if the Referee was asked / or volunteered to explain his most controversial decisions after a Game.
If could be done in a
low keyed way to clear up issues like ,Black cards and say two yellows like in the Tipp V Galway game today
i feel it would help people to understand better the decisions that Referees make

The first black card for Cavan was probably warranted. I dont beloeve for a second it was an accidental collision / foot trip but there you go. Players are getting cuter and better at disguising these things. The second was a mistake and it was the linesman made the call I think. But the player was played when the ball had been played away.

Cathal Barrett was two yellows all day long. The first was for careless use of the hurl. He dodnt make contact butbthe intent was there and he clearly tried to play the player with a downward swipe.

The second was also a yellow.

All three decisions were ridiculous IMO

I feel that Referees or Referees union or society or whatever looks after Referees should address this situation
I feel you are very officious ( You could be a referee or related to one ) in your views on the black cards that you mentioned

Fair question but I don't know of any sports league where Refs are questioned by the media. Not sure about this but I don't know of any.

I'm sure this is done behind closed doors in meetings they have and their performance is analysed alot by other refs. It is a very hard job especially in hurling and while I'm sure Johnny Murphy would love to explain his actions in relation to barrett to the public, what good would it do Cathal is always going to argue he was innocent. The first one looked soft all right but maybe he clipped him the second one definitely yellow hit him down on the head what was he doing ?

Why not put a mic on the ref and then you can hear his decisions on tv and if at the ground you could buy a ref link so that you could here his decisions. Going on tv shouldnt happen.

I don't know the answer to this but are the media allowed into dressing rooms after a match to ask players about their performance? Are they brought to a media room to a press conference?

I don't think it should be media driven. But in the two football matches yesterday there were 3 or 4 blatent errors made.
For the good of the game I think they should be clarified.
The Goal disallowed in Cork - I believe that should have stood. It is a very technical area and for better understanding of the rules allround I would like to see some official clarification of what would be the correct call in that situation.
Likewise the Mark that wasn't given to Cavan in the first half yesterday. Was that just a Referee error or was there a legitimate reason for not giving it?
Also the 2nd black card. I'd like to know what the interpretation was for that. For the first black card I'm assuming that the ref Thought it was a deliberate Trip. My interpretation was that it was accidental. But it would be nice to get explanations of the rules that were applied to help all improve our understanding of the game.
As an aside, Would it be useful if the TV coverage had a former referee (someone like McEneany from Monaghan) as an analyst to look at these close calls. I hate when you have the likes of Tomas O Se giving ill informed opinions on things that they just haven't a clue about.

you dont need to clarify every mistake unless its very clear ignorance of a rule. do you not have to call a mark for it to be given?
you dont need a former ref to be on the tv coverage. not many sports do. Just mic the ref up if its on tv so everyone at home can hear what the ref is saying and what they are giving frees for.

It doesnt help referees and isnt the solution to issues with referees

Absolutely they should be held accountable like any job you get paid for. It might help officiating as a whole going forward.

Barry Cassidy had an absolute shocker yerterday. he should have cost Cavan an ulster title but by some miraculous display of heart and guts we overcame his 5 blatant incorrect decisions. The two black cards were incorrect the foul on Tomas galligan when viewed on rte angle was a definite red card and would most definitely been one if it had of been a yellow and green jersey lying on the ground. Gearoid was denied a definite mark and martin reilly a definite free after a double foul in a very good position. The second black card should have cost cavan the match. Donegal only scored three points in total when cavan had their full fifteen players on the feel. My blood boils when after following Cavan for fifty years to think that our second anglo celt was so close to be robbed oft us by this mans ineptitude. To make matters worse none of this was highlighted on RTE last night and yet Sean Cavanagh tried to create controvesry over Cavan goal against down which no one had any problem with during the match and never mentioned that Downs goal should have been disallowed because it came from a mark that should not have been given.
Mickey was right the underdog never gets a break and because barry cassidy abject performance was never discussed last night he is probably in line for an all ireland final some joke

I agree with Killing Fields/Ormond. If people want explanations, do like they do in rugby and microphone the ref so that spectators can hear the rationale behind the decision in real time. If a referee had to explain his decisions after a game it would amount to putting him on trial and who would want to subject themselves to that? It would turn people off wanting to become referees.

It would also change how referees are thought of. They are known but nobody knows personality of refs or see's the good parts of a referee.
The only people a ref should be explaining any decisions after a game to are an appointed assessor or a coach of a team involved(within reason) and with a coach only on the specifics of rules..

In politics they say ' when you are explaining you are losing'.... I think the same would apply to referees if part of their refereeing duties was to explain after a match why he made certain decisions.
If people want an explanation as to why referees make particular decisions then they should....read the rule book!!!
I have read it online a few times after matches to help me understand particular decisions and rules and it is a big help.
Refereeing is tough enough without coming along afterwards and having to explain your decisions...

I watched all 5 matches over the weekend and very often it comes down to split second decision making... and as spectators we will get annoyed but that is part of the game where we will not always agree with him.

Do you want players to come on be asked about the mistakes they made? It is a very tough job now we are going to question every call they make after watching it 5 or 6 times on tv in slow motion.
