RTE is a closed shop full stop, knowing who gets what job is as predictable as knowing that it's going to rain sooner rather than later. Knowing who was going to take over from Michael Lyster and Sean O'Rourke in advance belittled the job, it also belittled those hoping to be selected for consideration, apparently there is no openness and transparency within the system.+.
It appears as if Sara Mc Inerney kept SOR's chair warm for Clair Byrne, at the same time she was serving her apprenticeship for the next move, it happened and good luck to her, but where was the advert. and the interviews. They moved David McCulloch who is imo, is a top drawer forensic investigating journalist from prime time slot to 6-01 News, is that a promotion, demotion, or a move sideways, either way sure it will leave a vacancy to be filled with Prime Time.?
I could never get my head around why they removed "Breakfast Republic" from the early morning 2fm breakfast show, it had huge following, plenty of ad lib stuff a variety of entertainment massive listenership numbers, only to be replaced with more music, less chat or entertainment.
I watched the last few minutes of Evanne ni ChuIlinn Saturday night presenting the gaa matches of the day, the pundits were Pat Spillane and Sean Cavanagh, what a load of rubbish, what we were watching was heavily glamourized, but lacked content, gone was the Pat Spillane and Sean Cavanagh we all once new, Pat in particular seemed to have been air brushed, he had a few elocution crash courses it seems, gone was the once familiar body language, the ad lib stuff even his very familiar Kerry accent had quietened, the d b levels have reached an all time low. Sean Cavanagh wasn't his familiar self either they were either reading from an auto que or from a minimised script.

Out of one frying pan, into a different fire as they say.

"Row over jobs in RTE as staff furious over plan for new Prime Time Host."

David Mc Cullagh's move to 6-01 News didn't make sense to me at first now it does. Surprise, surprise.
A well-known national journalist has completed a screen test and is favoured to take the job vacated by David McCullagh who has moved to the Six One News.

You literally described how almost every successful large business/corporation, political party (and some sports teams) operate. How does it belittle the job having someone being groomed for a role? It makes total sense to me.

I agree, RTE is as stale as most of its moribund vierwers. These viewers weekly weep at sensitive Ryans offerings and clog up twitter with meaningless gushings. We have cookery programs presented by well connected but unqualified cooks. Well connected overpaid political heavyweights with an even more limited capacity to ask the right questions. Then again we expect too much from our state run broadcaster, when you look at the quality of our political class we shouldnt be so demanding. Thankfully we have TG4 for culture, art and real sport.

TG4 are good but they only represent a limited segment of Irelands population and we pay well for it. RTE is shocking, the money spent on it is not value for money. We look across at the BBC and thats struggling even though its one of the biggest in the World. Theyve lost their way and there's a huge review and changes coming. Does Ireland have the will to follow suit with RTE? It isn't too late

Dee Forbes seemingly was pretty successful in previous employments and held many serious job titles, she appeared to have an endless budget at her disposal to see her projects through successfully, she worked mostly from an international platform with a team of professionals, from what I gather.

I don't think she will have the same success rate with RTE, I hope I'm wrong, I see RTE as being a big challenge for her full stop, reason being RTE is too small a platform, it's too parochial, it's far too political, it has no ownership of broad band, it's problems are deep rooted and historic, it's a project that's fragmented more so than is broken, the project repair cost was always in deficit before the repairs began and lacked professionalism, that's why I say I don't think Dee Forbes will have the same success rate with RTE, the reason being her previous projects were never challenged with a budget cost deficit or never wanted for professional assistants in her team.

As far as I can see, RTE lacks openness and transparency, it has tunnel vision, it's a one way street, RTE is heavily state funded by tax payer's money, there's 1200 ish, tax payers in RTE, most of which will never get off the bottom rung of the ladder, they deserve better than that.
My experience of state, semi state, and indeed private Company employers, mostly had an open and transparent policy, they had a door always open policy, they had a promotion prospect policy, they had an all jobs vacant advertising policy, they had a best person gets the job policy.

RTE need's a business partner perhaps a merge, if it gets through this recession it will get through any recession, - - I might then have second thoughts about Dee Forbes as CEO, of RTE.

Would agree that the BBC hasn't lost it's way, the British public just have more issues with the presenters and personalities they have on their shows, not the show themselves (with the exception of Top Gear which is pretty poor without the 3 former presenters)

It wouldn't be an All Ireland if every county wasn't playing though we'd enjoy a few nights in or out if that could ever happen. I wouldn't rate our 2020 All Ireland chances, under Horan, above Dublin, Kerry, yerselves, Galway or Tyrone.

RTE showed the program, Unquiet Graves. This was a good program. At the start it showed highlights of the Dublin V Derry gaelic football match, All Ireland semi final in 1975. And how two Derry fans were shot dead by the UDR, at a road block, on their way back. They had Derry GAA flags on their car. I know there are always two sides to every story. But this involved GAA fans.

Is it the devil you know and familiarity breeds contempt ? I can tell you one think rte talk hosts are the best in the world. Try listen to American host talking over their guests. Not listening to the answer because they are reading the next scripted question or listening in their ear piece to the producer.
RTE may not be perfect but if it was gone in the morning people would be screaming how it is missed and how good it was compared to the new privately owned network. We really are a fickle people.

When I posted the thread "RTE," in hind sight the thread probably should have read "RTE / GAA". The two state / semi state bodies work well together and are part of our culture, RTE are part of our modern day culture and the GAA are part of our historic culture, in fact I would go as far as saying they would work very well together in business. The GAA was very much part of making the launch of RTE in 1961 a major success, from there on RTE was very much part of bringing all things GAA into the homes of most people in the country successful and without bios, RTE and the GAA have made legends out of a lot of our people and their counties, fact, the people mostly responsibly for this were Michael O'Hehir and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh in particular, add to that Mícheál "Maidhc" Ó Sé, Gay Byrne, Roll it there "Collette", Jerry Ryan, Mary McAleese, Marion Finucane, (RIP) etc, etc, etc .RTE made mega stars out of some of their talk hosts / presenters, seemingly though at the expense of others.

I wouldn't be in favour of comparing our RTE with that of other international broadcasters, they have their ways and we have ours, ours are far from perfect, but I'd prefer ours.

The GAA are far from perfect either that's why I sort of fight with them all the time, but I wouldn't have it any other way. If RTE were gone in the morning the GAA would go into serious decline, if the GAA were to disappear tomorrow, then RTE would go into melt down the next day.

I never left the GAA, rather it left me when they introduced the Back Door system, the Sky deal, the multi card system, the black card, and their attitude towards the weaker counties.

The problem with RTE is they appear to do everything right except knowing how to use the talent at their disposal, and when to dot the I's and cross the T's when it matters most, it gets them into all sorts of trouble.

RTE's problem is not directly related to sport, essentially they are a state sponsored entity, more Sputnik rather than RT. As a result there is an unwritten script, a self censorship that cannot cope with controversy. Hence the dumping of the colourful but off beat Brolly and the introduction of the wooden Cantwell and the end of controversy. RTE's brief flirtation with controversy was at a time of huge growth in the games and its popularity. RTE I agree its survival is probably intertwined with the GAA, but covid 19 has changed the landscape this is a major reset. In 1918 Irish Whiskey was a mega World Brand, WWI, war of Independence and prohibition reset the playing field to zero. Scotch replaced Irish and ot has taken 90 years to create a level playing field again. The GAA needs to embrace TG4 that is where the future for the local game is. RTE is sterile and it is finished as a major promoter of GAA. Just look and listen to its pathetic news coverage, Pravda would be proud of it.

RTÉ has and continues to do a serious disservice to the Irish people, while it is now a bastion of liberal woke ideology it's not too long ago it sided with whom ever was in power and was a particular tool of the Catholic Church.
It would be in the interest of the Irish people that the station either gets closed down or and least lose it state funding

Still a state run entity that operates ultimately as an arm of whatever Govt is in power. They have some excellent documentary coverage, but where sport and news is concerned they are a basket case.

The problem with RTE is they appear to do everything right except knowing how to use the talent at their disposal, and when to dot the I's and cross the T's when it matters most, it gets them into all sorts of trouble."
You are so right about how the so called weaker counties historically and presently are treated. It could be viewed as deliberately maintaining the status co. There was lots of enjoyment got watching club games this season. Don't tell me for a second that division 2, 3 or 4 games are not a standard above the club game as good as it was. This is some thing for the GAA and broadcasters to correct.
When Waterford slipped down into the lower division I travelled to watch their games the same as when in division one. This gave me a great appreciation of the players from KIdare, Mayo, Derry, Down etc. and to this day follow their fortunes. The same way I know we have produced footballers and football teams of a high calibre. It just seems that there is no interest in elevating these teams and counties. I can hear it being said that is up to themselves but being in the lime light is big leg up and incentive.
