Kieran Donaghy Wants GAA To Shut Down GAA Forums

"It's tough for young players coming through, everything is scrutinised that bit more.

"I have no issue people saying stuff if they can be held accountable but this being able to say stuff and not be held accountable is wrong.

"And you know what these forums that every county has too they'd want to be …if the GAA was to do one thing I'd shut down everyone one of those forums, they are such a negative forum, (there's) lot of poison inside in them and people giving out."

Quote from an interview he did with the42. Does he have a point?

Can kind of understand his point but i dont think they should be shut down and dont know how he expects the GAA to be able to shut them down. Most forum are fairly well moderated(This one too much at times) and most tripe aimed at players is removed or doesnt get through. Any forum that lets clowns come on abusing players is best avoided anyway.

Nonsense.

I agree with him to a point.. But i think the main issue hands down is social media. People that haven't a clue about our games spouting rubbish and attacking individual players. Most people that join GAA forums like this one and others are GENERALLY more knowledgeable and a share a love of Gaelic Games.

A bit hypocritical from Donaghy, given how aggressive pundits can be (even apart from Brolly)

Very rarely have I seen anyone personally attack a gaa figure on this forum. I think when it comes to younger players, people on here are genuinely kinder in their words and are considerate to the time and effort amateur players put in.

Twitter is no holds barred, it seems.

I think most county managers address this issue when a young player comes onto a panel. Unfortunately this is the way of the world now it is not a GAA issue it is a social issue in general.

He said people should be held accountable for their words, pundits are in fairness very transparent. I agree with him completely. Look at the damage that anonymous cyber-bullies have done to the innocent of all ages. Who profits from such behaviour?

GAA on TG4 is very fair and family friendly, the only one I listen too if I have a choice. Nothing said on RTE GAA is particularly interesting.

Agree completely. Twitter tends to be where characters are assassinated, mind you a couple of Donaghy's compatriots made a good fist of it against a certain official from Meath last year across mainstream and social media. Like all two way channels, social media is a double edged sword. It can be your making and your breaking. Forums like this one are needed to generate decent debate between followers of the sport and as long as it is well moderated, and this one is, then no problems.

He didn't seem too concerned at all about comments directed towards figures in the GAA when it was his own county trying to orchestrate the prevention of Gough from refereeing last year's All-Ireland. Self-awareness appears to be in short supply, no surprises there though.

I don't think he's got a point at all.

We're fans, we've a right to chat on the games.

Targeted abuse of people should be dealt with on a situational basis.

Banning all GAA forums is an absolutely mad solution to the problem.

It'd be like me taking a hatchet to my nose to get rid of a spot.

Agree completely about Twitter. With a forum you can decide weather or not to take part and ignore a forum if you think it's toxic but on Twitter ejits can @ or # a player so he can't avoid it and all his friends and family will see it too

It has to be one of the most unhelpful and damaging online services.

Very easy to simply not click on a hashtag if it's there or search for it. And you can turn off notifications if they at you and you can delete them immediately so as not to pay any attention to them
