Liam Clancy's rendition of that song is hard to beat. I've never seen all the verses before, so thanks for posting that.

A candidate for obscurity and perhaps most unpatriotic would be Tulsk Lord Edwards

This got me wondering about the proportion of clubs in a typical league that are not named for a patriot or a saint. So I took a look at the Dublin football championship. Only four out of 16 are not. shaneShankill (Dublin) - Posts: 42 - 17/12/2019 23:23:04 2255429 Link 0 |
Majority of meath is just a placename. We've a few saints but very few patriots. In senior we've Nobber, Summerhill, Skryne, Dunshaughlin, Ratoath, Donaghmore/Ashbourne, Moynalvey, Seneschalstown, Curraha and Simonstown Gaels Then Wolfe Tones, St. Colmcilles, Gaeil Colmcille, Na Fianna, Navan O'Mahonys and St. Peter's Dunboyne. In the remaining 43 clubs you've Saints Mary, Brigid, Patrick, Michael, Paul, Ultan and Vincent, plus Drumbaragh Emmets. Not sure how you'd classify "Clann na nGael".... To the best of my knowledge all others are just a placename. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1677 - 18/12/2019 00:15:54 2255432 Link 7 |

In Wexford there are clubs called Sarsfields, Liam Mellows and Rapparees that I can think of. There was a club named after Daniel O Connell I think, but they folded. Groundball (Wexford) - Posts: 122 - 18/12/2019 11:51:53 2255461 Link 0 |
You just found another category with Clann na nGael. Teams named after patriotic politicial organisations

From what I have been able to ascertain... On Robert Emmet - 15 GAA clubs use 'Emmets' in their name. On Patrick Sarsfields - 13 GAA clubs use Sarsfields in their name. Any others are 10 or below in terms of usage stats. These are stats for GAA clubs in Ireland only (not overseas clubs). Note: There are additional 3 clubs who use 'Emmetts' in their name as opposed to Emmets, which are not counted in above stat. I don't know why there are 'Emmetts' as well as 'Emmets' and whether they are meant to be the same (Anyone from Lisnaskea, Brocagh or Eskra might be able to shed light there). arcadia (Longford) - Posts: 221 - 18/12/2019 14:51:47 2255491 Link 0 |

Ah, I didn't have Aghaboy as Emmets, I just had them as Aghaboy in my data but you are quite right. So that is 16 GAA clubs with Emmets in their name as follows... Aghaboy Emmets Bray Emmets Carnew Emmets Carrickmacross Emmets Clonmore Robert Emmets Colligan Emmets Cushendun Emmets Dorsey Emmets Glen Emmets Kilkerley Emmets Killoe Young Emmets Listowel Emmets Menlo Emmets Robert Emmets (Donegal) Robert Emmets (Dublin) Roche Emmets In addition, there are 3 clubs with 'Emmetts' in their name... Longstone GAA club in County Down were named after Robert Emmett. They played under the name Longstone Emmetts in their early days. Kilcoo are named after Eoghan Ruaidh O'Neill. There are other clubs named after him, one in Tyrone I think. REDANDBLACK30 (Down) - Posts: 1702 - 18/12/2019 17:55:58 2255513 Link 0 |
On the Eoghan Ruaidh O'Neill point, there are 2 other clubs, both in Tyrone - Owen Roe O'Neill's in Leckpatrick and Brackaville Owen Roes. There are up to 10 clubs with O'Neill in the name, named after a few different people.
