Was St. Oliver Plunkett a "patriot"? He was persecuted for the British for his faith, but I don't recall ever hearing much about any patriotic acts of his. CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1677 - 15/12/2019 21:41:24 2255052 Link 5 |
Re Saint Oliver Plunkett. That poses another question. Which saint has the most clubs named after him or her. shaneShankill (Dublin) - Posts: 42 - 15/12/2019 23:01:42 2255069 Link 0 |

Must be that or St. Patricks. There's a St. Patricks in Meath, Kilkenny, Limerick, Wicklow, Carlow, Wexford, Sligo, Louth, Kerry, Tipperary, Armagh, Fermanagh and Tyrone, and two in Dublin. As for Patriots I'm thinking Padraig Pearse if you include all the "Pearses" and "Na Piarsaigh", plus you also have Pearse park and Pearse Stadium! Plenty of opportunity for controversy with that one. The most obscure must be Redmond O'Hanlon though in Armagh, or maybe Bishop MacHale in Dunmore.

Longford Slashers take their name from Myles "The Slasher" O'Reilly who fought in the Irish Confederate Wars. There used to be a Cavan Slashers club but they merged with Cavan Harps to form Cavan Gaels in the 50s. Don't think there are any other clubs with the Slashers moniker.
