Am I right in saying Conor McManus, Lee Keegan and Brian Fenton did not make their county minor teams? GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 14/12/2019 19:27:23 2254857 Link 6 |
The story of Willie Joyce (Padraic's uncle) will be hard to beat. He never played underage football, not even at club level. The first match he ever played was for the Killererin junior team in 1967. They were a man short so they asked Willie to tog out just to make up the numbers. He was stuck in at full forward and he scored 4 goals! Within 2 years he was on the Galway senior team and was an automatic starter until his retirement in 1984, playing in 4 all-Ireland finals and winning a national league medal. Here is a link to a Hogan Stand article about Willie from 1995: Gaillimh_Abu (Galway) - Posts: 996 - 14/12/2019 19:27:59 2254858 Link 2 |

Henry Sheflin played both minor football and hurling for Kilkenny in 1997. Interesting Laois were reigning All Ireland champions that time and were pushed all the way by Kilkenny. Laois retained their title later that year

Damien comes was overage for minor in 2013. And as previous posted said i believe he never mad Galway minor panel when he was underage for it.

You're right about McManus, he didn't play minor championship for Monaghan. It was a strange one as he was in the training panel but wasn't selected for the match day squad. And its not like he wasn't good back then as he was one of the best players on the team that won the county minor that year. Maybe the manager thought he was too slight then, but even then he was starting to play a bit with the Clontibret seniors and just 2 years later he came on in the Ulster senior final between Tyrone and Monaghan, and his physique wouldn't have changed much in those couple of years. Strange all round.

We've had two all stars in O'Connell and McManus, while Drew Wylie didn't make it either. FarneyAbu16 (Monaghan) - Posts: 8 - 18/12/2019 00:13:08 2255430 Link 0 |
