Bring GAA Championship Matches Across The Water

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Following Liverpool's announcement today, wouldn't it be a great idea to bring proper GAA Championship Matches to venues across the UK? Imagine Dublin playing Kerry in front of a full house in Wembley or Kilkenny v Limerick in an All Ireland quarter final at the London Stadium? This would do serious work for GAA in London.

Would be great event for Irish in England. Even just bringing over some league games would be good.

Or the GAA put some money into Ruislip to develop it into a stadium with a decent capacity it could be done. They are known for throwing money at stadiums that are never filled after all.

I'm picturing a hurling game played in Wembley or the London Stadium, where frees from your full back line become scoreable and with a mild breeze the goalkeeper will be able to score points from puckouts.

Why not bring the GAA back to its roots and have a competitive game of leapfrog

Only hope would be rugby stadiums, and even then the width is too small

Terrible idea keep our own matches in our own country. Keep our own money in our country.

Let London play away over there no need for anything else brought over

To be fair Ruislip is actually a really nice and extremely adequate facility. Not sure what more you want

It's an interesting idea - I'd play a short KO of 4 or 8 teams in a separate competition (Challenge Cup) - hurling (and football) scores can only be scored directly from within opponent's half of the field.
Real hurling please - none of this awful Super 11s fiction.

I've yet to see a full wembley or an atmosphere there that's worthy of a top GAA match

I think let's sort our own competitions out before worrying about games in the uk.

Actually Limerick have previously played Kilkenny in the old Wembley Stadium.
When Limerick beat the Cats in the A.I. final in 1973 both teams were rewarded with a trip to play there.
Took place a few weeks after the final (i think) and was actually screened live here at home on a Saturday.

Put money into redeveloping Ruislip first. It would be nice to have a suitable stadium which is closer to the city centre but cricket pitches are the only ones big enough to be converted. I don't any cricket ground in London will do a deal with the GAA

I would love to see club championship matches played in Ireland in the summer. I know counties prefer Wednesdays in October to play finals but if we could trial playing a game in July...it might promote the games..

The old Wembley was an iconic stadium with a much better atmosphere than the watered down modern day corporate library they came up with to replace it. A lot of new stadiums seem to be all about the design with little regard for the atmosphere that gave the original grounds their reputation. Any idea of the attendance for that match in 73?

Ridiculous suggestion, quite obvious that many people on here are armchair GAA fans who just have an interest in Inter County GAA. More than likely the Liverpool offer will be seized upon by the GPA to play some rubbish 11 a side game on to promote themselves & certain leadership with ego within the Association will jump on the bandwagon saying look at us expanding our brand & bringing GAA to the Diaspora. Have you no clue of the difference in dimensions between a GAA pitch & a soccer pitch, with Anfield being one of the smaller pitches in the Premiership.
The GAA has existed in mainland Britain for decades & survived through clubs who had volunteers who grafted hard to create something & got very little help from the GAA. Anyone who has played or helped out in Britain knows the scene. Bringing Inter County Championship matches to Anfield is not the help they need, it's at club level with coaching & facilities they need it. They need to stop counties coming to London fundraising & leaving the pot dry for clubs & the County Board there who are trying hard to redevelop Ruislip. Instead what we have is people in power at the very top of the Association using the Boards in Britain to get voted in to power or pass votes at Congress by putting them on Croke Park Committee's & dishing out All Ireland tickets to them. The whole Sky deal we were told by the outgoing President & DG was to bring the games to a wider audience & the Diaspora around Britain & the world, anyone living over there will tell you that under the old system there was greater accessibility to watching the games & the facts show that there are dramatically less people viewing live GAA in Britain than previous to the Sky deal. That deal wasn't anything to do with bringing games to the Diaspora, it was all about cash for the GAA.
If you want to know what the GAA really wants in Britain talk to those at the club face fund raising, coaching & playing & lets not be talking sh#te about playing C'ship quarter finals in London.

I don't like the new stadiums in the UK really.

The Emirates (blugh) it definitely the least atmospheric ground I've been to. Just completely sanitised.

I used to like grounds like White Hart Lane with a bit of character.

Unfortunately there's a lot more money in the corporate packages, hence the identikit stadiums.

While we're at it I bloody loved the only Casement Park. I was going to games when they still had the grass bank. The terrace that they had was spot on then too.
