Well, that's an advance: a few weeks ago you described Clifford as merely a "good footballer". It may come as a surprise to you to learn that Clifford scored more from play in this year's championship than O Shea. It may also come as a surprise to you to learn that Clifford scored more from play in this year's All Ireland Finals than O Shea. It may also come as a surprise to you to learn that no one scored more from play than Clifford in this year's All Ireland Finals. Despite the presence of those extraordinarily talented Dublin forwards, and Jack McCaffrey. As you say yourself: "that's what he's there for". So, you can drop your "definitely". Paddy Durcan played a good few games at wing forward if my memory is right, just to be devils advocate. Maybe that's how the game is going, looking at the all star team, Durcan, Howard, Con, McShane and Murphy are able to play in multiple lines. Maybe that's how the most talented players are going to be developed going on. It's something I know we look to. But I'd agree with you general point, the all stars are gone a silly things really. Weirdly the All Stars have me thinking Howard could be an excellent 6, he ran the show from there in his brief cameos this year. Could be the heir when Cian does leave us or plays less games, would also allow us to play Dermo or develop one of the other half forwards breaking through. That said Jonny Small is an unsung hero outside Dublin, the way Jamesy used to be, first name on the team sheet and had terrific finals in my opinion with very little fanfare, but vital. He scored the same from play as Paul Mannion.

So outside 5 counties there are no All-Stars..... befair (Down) - Posts: 237 - 03/11/2019 00:09:03 2247322 Link 1 |
Anyone who thinks Michael Murphy didn't deserve an All-Star, should be taken away by the men in white coats! I dunno what ye were looking at all year, but it certainly wasn't football.

Well , I'm not the one making the decision about the awards but I'm not the only one disagreeing with you. Clifford is a good footballer but he missed chances that would have won Kerry that first final and while not the only one he is the one being singled out and hyped. When the chances presented themselves he couldn't deliver and that's what your ultimately judged on at that level. O'Shea was better all year and would be a better all round player for me. No shame in coming second to him at all at all. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 03/11/2019 09:58:10 2247346 Link 2 |
Murphy had to get an all star because the GPA are critical to the staging of the event. Murphy works for the GPA

So now that Cliffords scoring record is shown to be superior you are resorting to 'chances missed'. Talk about moving the goalposts, if you'll forgive the pun. I have never heard someone say; "Johnny scored 10 points from play but he's useless: he missed 2." You have certainly introduced a new angle here! And we are back to him being merely a "good footballer". What other mere "good footballer" has won 2 All-Stars and 1 YPOTY ? Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 263 - 03/11/2019 11:10:08 2247355 Link 2 |
Well he is " a good footballer " like , what's wrong with that. What would you have me call him bud ? I'd see O Shea as the better performer throughout the league and championship though so I'll stick with that. I've already been proven right anyway on his selection ahead of Clifford. Maith an fear. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 03/11/2019 11:17:50 2247358 Link 4 |
Is there a reason that you are so sensitive about this particularly topic? That poster is correct, O'Shea a better all rounder. It's not controversial.

" Good footballer" reeks of sarcasm, obviously.....and borders on the insulting. If you are referring to the fact that O Shea won YFOTY and Clifford did not, please note: • Clifford was not likely to win again this year as he already won it in 2018 and was going to get a (second) All-Star. • Clifford won YPOTY when younger than O Shea. Also, Clifford played only one full game in the league, the final, in which incidentally he scored 2 points from play while O Shea did not score at all from play. So, it's complete nonsense to say that O Shea was a "better performer" in the League. Every argument you raise is founded on swampy ground. Time to relent, maybe? I don't think people should be turning things into a case of O'Shea vs. Clifford, and who is the better player, and especially not people from their own county. Kerry should just count its lucky stars that it has two of the finest young forwards in the game. Many's the county that would be glad to have either and it's not arguing over them they'd be. All going well, both players would seem to have fine careers ahead of them. Whether they'll win AI's or not, is a different issue. Sport can be strange! I remember another great young Kerry player bursting onto the scene years ago, and winning an All-Star in his first year. Back then, few could have predicted that Maurice Fitz would be in his 10th season with Kerry before he'd win his first AI medal. shoulderghost (Limerick) - Posts: 863 - 03/11/2019 13:00:29 2247377 Link 2 |
