Davy Fitz To Galway

Replying To slayer:  "A positive view in my opinion.

I think he would bring tremendous organisation and could see Galway operating with 4 out & out forwards with a couple of players dropping deep. I don't think they will be sweepers as such just focusing on limiting what the opposition are scoring. We hit 3-16 against them in the 2018 final, in reality it could have been 5-25. Kilkenny hit 3-22 against them in the 2012 replay.

Galway can be very open at times. When they have been a success it has been to go at the opposition ferociously and outscore them - e.g. the 2012 Leinster Final. About 5 minutes before half time it was something like 2-11 to 0-1. But when the opposition are able to pick off scores throughout the game, Galway can struggle. Even going back as far as 87 & 88 it was Galway's tremendous defence that was the launchpad, conceding 0-9 and 0-14 in successive finals.

An outstanding bunch of players plus a proven winner in Munster, Leinster & on the All-Ireland final stage. A potent mix for success."
I don't like or really agree with out and out sweepers but Galway have shipped a lot of easy goals the last 2 seasons. Daithi Burke, mannion and mcinerney have all been culpable and turned too easily so I'm sure a new manager will be looking to sort that out as well as create more goals at the other end and get decent ball into conor whelan who has paid the price for playing alongside a target man like Johnny glynn and last two seasons has rarely got good ball into him and yet still performs well but there's a lot more in him.
For the record I don't see Galway going for Davy. Eamon O'Shea by all accounts is a great coach but not really the man for managing Galway either in my opinion

Replying To perfect10:  "finally, someone who looks at what happens all over the field.

what davy does with wexford is no different than what anyone has done in any other county.

your just not let call it a sweeper if the county is from munster.

my favourite moment of the whole year was liam ryan coming up the field in the semi to score a point having soloed half of the length of the pitch.would he have done that not knowing if someone was dropping back to cover?

come on lads its not the 1960s tactics and the game change.i hope the next wexford manager will be as innovative as davy was.whether or not the traditionalists like it,i dont give a toss.

saying you dont want a manager because of a system which is being used in some form or other by every county is just lazy analysis."
It's clearly a different style of play! Are you for real? There was members of the full back line inside the far 45 in that game! And what you mean if the county is from Munster. Derek McGrath's name and sweeper is mentioned for the last 6 years! Go home you're drunk

I'm a Galway fan and I'm a Davy fan but I don't want to see this happen. I'd like to see Davy stay in Wexford for the sake of the sport. He's doing a great job there and has the interest level in the county at an all time high. I'd hate to see him leave there even for my county.

Replying To eoghan6688:  "I personally don't want him as the Galway manager, but if he did become manager and was successful all well and good. Davy seems to be obsessed with playing the sweeper system for 75 minutes+ minutes per match. Plus, if things started going south at any point near the start of a season, and the media got on his back, I don't think he'd have the calmness or composure under pressure to help the players turn things around"
He is successful anywhere he goes. He would win an all Ireland with Galway in my view. Speaking to mid west radio yesterday in mayo he stated nobody from Galway hurling has spoken to him....maybe that was a come and get me plee to the Galway board as it's reported Galway players have met with him.

He'll be in for a shock when he asks for the mere basics in managing the team only to be rebuffed by the visionaries in the Galway County board.

If it is to be Mr Fitz well good luck to him. And a Céad míle fáilte too. What does sponsor - Super Mac, Pat McDonagh think of this?

Davy is a short term boost manager for any county, as his record shows. He does make an initial impact to teams who have dropped off but be in no doubt he doesn't come cheap, might not happen.

It's a very fair point, Galway are very weak defensively, shipping three goals against both Kilkenny and Dublin this year, and don't even start me on the defensive horror show against Limerick in last year's All Ireland. So yeah it would be good to have a manger who can organise his defence properly, as it's not something Galway have had for the last two seasons.

I think that's called making excuses to cover up for his own failings and being schooled on the line by Liam Sheedy during that 2nd half

Fair play, nice te read such honesty. Don't think it's going to cut any ice with Davy though

Maybe so but Davy's way of shoring up the defence is by robbing scoring power from the forwards - fewer goals conceded but less converted on the other side.

As a Galway man I'm happy he's staying in Wexford, more because of the baggage he'd bring. He creates a siege mentality, us against the world, which works well when a county hasn't won anything in years and he's trying to give them the belief to win but I don't think the Galway lads would buy into it. The year Limerick beat them they showed serious character in nearly every game that summer.
On the other hand Fitzgerald likes taking counties that are desperate to win something and don't expect miracles. It'd be a big test of his abilities to see if he could take a proven all Ireland winning team and make them win it again. He got an aging Waterford team to the final and got a pasting, but nobody would've beaten Kilkenny that day. But he couldn't repeat the trick. He's done great with Wexford and Clare but there was a lot of underage success in both counties previously.
There's all Ireland winners in Galway and a few will probably only give it another year or two. I know moneytalk always follows Fitzgerald but did he just take the safer option with Wexford with less expectation and pressure?

Took Galway 28 years to win an All Ireland, their 5th, one less than Wexford so would fit the category you have described. Glad he is staying, up Wexford.

You seen to have misunderstood a question about Fitzgerald as a dig at Wexford's place on the roll of honour. Baffling. Then again, that narrow mindedness Is exactly how Fitzgerald operates...you must think the world is out to get you.

For what it's worth, I'm a Wexford man who agrees with you.

If you look at what Davy's done in each of the counties he's been with….he brought Waterford to their first All-Ireland Final in 45 years. Clare didn't look like realistic All-Ireland contenders when he took over there, yet he went out and won one with them. And whatever you might think of his tactics, I think everybody recognises how Wexford's standing has improved under him over the past three years as well.

Common thread in all three places is that he'd have been able to go in at the start and say something like "look lads, what you've been doing this past few years hasn't been working for you, so now let's try it my way".

But despite a disappointing 2019 for Galway, that wouldn't wash there, when you consider where they were for the couple of years before that.

Anyway, I'm delighted he's committed to us again. Am already looking forward to next year.

I thought Galway would be mad for someone like Davy Fitz.

Galway are mentally weak when it comes to winning titles at senior Inter County level.

They had played second fiddle to Kilkenny since entering Leinster in 2009, winning Leinster 3 times in the 11 years compared to Kilkennys 6, granted it was a very strong Kilkenny team.

Last 2 All Ireland's were in 2017 and 1988.

I wondering could Davy's siege mentality actually help a county like Galway who have had very little success at senior level?
