It was 1964/1965 when Tipperary last won back to back titles. Different era.

Hurling is a uniquely different game, most games are won in last 10 mins. I have seen games even right up to 5 mins to go sometimes with one team ahead by 2 and they get beaten by ten, a 12 point turn around.

Enjoy watching your team play the equivalent of Senior C hurling next year ranked a whopping 16th in the Country...only thing left are distant memories on All Ireland Gold!!

Me like a spoilt child since Sunday? Jeez, I think I've taken the defeat better than any Kilkenny fan out there. I'm actually too much of a good loser, that's why I'd never make it as a manager. Yeah we overachieved this year to get to the final. I've said all summer in this forum that Tipp and Limerick are the two best teams in the country. I don't think there's much between ourselves, Wexford, Galway, Dublin (Laois shock aside), Cork, Clare in the 3-8 positions, they could all beat each other on any given day. I think Waterford have regressed badly and are number 9 until they buck up their act, and then, all due respect, the Joe McDonagh team number 10. Although I'd be interested to see Laois playing Waterford, I wouldn't say there'd be much between them. ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 22/08/2019 23:44:35 2228664 Link 0 |
This is the thing I love most about hurling over football. If a team is 6 points up in football, it's practically game over. The winning team can just chuck the ball around for 2 or 3 minutes at a time, wind down the clock, flood the defence to make it next to impossible to concede a goal and know that the other team will not have enough time or possession to make up the difference. You can't "sit" on a 6 point lead in hurling like that, a 6 point lead can be wiped out in 2 minutes of hurling, and it mightn't even be 2 quick fire goals either, could be 1-3 scored just like that! Most of yer man's examples are skewed anyway, he's including the Carlow games which were always going to be one sided (until such time as the Joe McDonagh teams can get up to the standard to consistently compete with the Liam McCarthy teams) and Waterford, who were rank this year. ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 23/08/2019 00:05:08 2228667 Link 0 |
You still don't believe Jason Flynn was brutalised by some Limerick players a few years ago! It happens in every county, including my own, unfortunately. "Limerick All-Star Aaron Gillane is set for a spell on the sidelines after he suffered a broken jaw in a club match. Gillane was in excellent form for his side Patrickswell in their Limerick SHC draw against Kilmallock recently, but he took a knock to the jaw which was later revealed to have broken during the impact. A spokesperson for the club confirmed that Gillane had indeed broken his jaw during the game. Limerick's top scorer is set to miss six weeks of action and thus could miss the rest of the 'Well's SHC campaign, depending on how far they go. In the same game, 2018 Hurler of the Year Cian Lynch was shown a straight red card, meaning Patrickswell will be missing two of their key players for the next round of games." You'd miss Thurles Blues all the same :)

Yes your right. Cian probably deserved to go off and if the there is a culprit in the Guillane case- as in was it deliberate- he deserves any punishment he gets. However I have always felt, and I saw all three games, namely the 1967 All Ireland Final, 1968 League Final and 2007 AIF were truly 'iconic' if you get my drift. The Munster Finals of '71 and '73 were not far behind, and sadly my own county were involved in both games, in this 'iconicness'. We were the innocents in 71, but by '73 we had, shall we say, 'matured'. baire, it could be said that when your own county comes out on top in those ' iconic' battles ( note the word battles) the usual approach is all is fair in love and war. However, human nature being what it is, it leaves a sour taste in the mouth if your side loses in one of these contests. Baire- serious question- which semi final was Jason Flynn injured in- 15 or 17. I know in one game refereed by Fergal Horgan,-17 I think- three Galway men and two Limerick were yellow carded, and a Galway man was put off in 11, so it was haddly all one way. Not so much, while we have his reincarnation, Katser

It was at U-21 level - JF was also on the senior team that year, 2015, hence targeted from the start of the game. There was a tragedy in the family when he was younger, lost his older brother, a great hurler, in a car accident - life can be tougher off the field.

In fairness Baire, but for them how many would KK have won this decade. They were actually finally taken out of the championship by Tipp three times in this decade and each time by clear cut margins and in 14 it could have gone either way. They were knocked out on only three other occasions. By Cork in '13, with fourteen men, in 17 by Waterford in extra time in a replay and last year by Limerick in a cliff hanger.

I think Galway's participation in the Leinster championship played a part in their demise, esp the defeat of 2012 in the Leinster championship, it showed others they were not invincible.

Yeah but KK still won the AI after a replay. I would argue Galway made Leinster better for KK as Offaly fell away and Wexford were only so so. KK faded because they eventually got old, not because Galway were in Leinster.

Wexford were only so so? KK had won 13 Leinsters in a row! It was beyond a joke! KK were coming fresh into an AISF each year whilst in 2012 they had to play Galway three times in tough, tight games, with the result that both counties were exhausted by 2013. Galway's participation in the Leinster championship changed the dynamic in Leinster and in the All Ireland series. It changed gradually from being a 2-3 team race to an 8 team race. baire (Galway) - Posts: 1805 - 24/08/2019 15:54:48 2229016 Link 0 |
Galway entered Leinster in 2009 and Kilkenny still won 5 of the next 7 All Irelands. I'd say a greater reason for the "demise" has been the retirement of Shefflin, Walsh, Delaney, Tyrell, Larkin, Power, Brennan etc. The replacements coming through aren't of the same calibre.

Good points. Don't get me wrong I prefer the way it is now.

True, their retirement left the KK team weaker but it was still in the top four. KK had great players during those Cody years, and he was able to rejuvenate the team up to 2016. Along with the retirements, other county teams started to up their game in preparation, S&C, some using the Cody model so that the gap between them got narrower. Apart from Tipp, from 2006-2012 KK were not just beating teams, they were trouncing them. Hard to envisage any team dominating like that again in our time but who knows, Tipp or KK, maybe Limerick, could win back to back in the next few years. baire (Galway) - Posts: 1805 - 25/08/2019 00:58:39 2229090 Link 1 |
Baire, Just a friendly comment and not attempting to be smart, but Kilkenny did not win 13 Leinsters in a row. Wexford won Leinster in 2004
