Where did I mention a golden age. Anyway in 2018 Lk beat Cork Tipp and Kilkenny and the All Ireland Champions to boot. Nothing lucky about that.

Ciaran Carey never won an All Ireland, possibly best player never to win one? ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 08/08/2019 22:08:56 2222853 Link 2 |
Yes. There was a famous picture of his sister consoling him in Croke Park after the loss to Wexford in'96 and of the same lady 22 years later, having got through security to embrace her son Cian Lynch in glorious victory. A two point loss in one case, a point win in another- but what a difference.

We were bullied by strong teams this year Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 519 - 08/08/2019 19:39:52 2222787 Bullied? I see, all of Waterford's problems this year were down to them being "bullied" by the big boys. Nothing to do with the Waterford players, management or county board. Carey was a joy to watch. Joe McKenna, G Kirby, G Hegarty and many other great Limerick hurlers went so close.

Thanks baire, but McKenna was on in '73, so he at least, but his best were ahead of him.

Thanks Baire. Last Saturday week we lost albeit narrowly. We can say KK were lucky but they did what they had to do and deserved their victory. From the point of view of both our players and management they must face up to the fact that on day both groups came up short. If we don't do that we will never fully address our own failings and will not gain much from the loss.

KK were bullied by Tipp for years. When Galway gave KK a hiding in the 2001 ASF Cody vowed that they'd never be bullied like that again! We all know what followed ...

Your manager has the right attitude, not to dwell on it or make excuses. That's a young Limerick team with the added bonus of winning an All Ireland. It's getting harder to win back to back, the hits are greater and there's huge competition between at least 7 or 8 potential All Ireland winners.

5 points was hardly a hiding but Galway's physicality that day definitely changed the landscape of hurling for the next decade with KK winning 7 of the next 10. Brian Cody swiftly moved away from the silky Charlie Carter type players and went for predominately big strong men up front.

I was at the game. Apart from the tall Joe Rabbitte where was Galway's physicality? Fergal Healy, David Tierney, Kevin Broderick, Ollie Canning, Alan Kerins, Ger Farragher etc. Galway won with fast wristy hurlers and were unlucky to lose the final against Tipp. It was an excuse for Cody to bring in the physicality imo.

He basically told the KK lads in 2002 preseason no other KK under his watch would be bullied or outworked. Winning your own ball was a requirement after that, no soft ball handed out to you. Explain to me, how were we lucky? We had luck for sure, but beating everyone bar Clare to win an All ireland suggested a bit more than simple luck... skillet (Limerick) - Posts: 1063 - 09/08/2019 14:10:32 2223032 Link 1 |
When you're far away in Australia you can be way off the mark! Don't mind him skillet!

I am not blaming any team for how they played against us to win. Bullied in the sense that their physicality does not allow stylist smaller players any time on the ball. Reality is if you combine the height of each player on all the teams and do an average Waterford players would be way down the list. Again I am not saying a smaller player can't do the job but he needs to be twice as good. Look there is plenty blame to go around but it seldom makes anything better. At the end of the day it is played between the lines and I personally believe Waterford need to play tougher. Maybe they just don't have. Your Kilkenny knows how to bring on the heat. ( often on the edge). I said 10 minutes into the Clare game they are not able to compete and getting pushed all over the place. This year for some reason they looked like the worst prepared team since the 80's. These same players who were flying two years ago. I don't know why so abstain from blaming. "Bullied in the sense that their physicality does not allow stylist smaller players any time on the ball. I saw limerick v Waterford last year in Limerick and was at Walsh Park this summer. No huge size difference between the teams. Last year, even though we won fairly handily, waterford never stopped fighting. This year at home as soon as we got our first goal after 15 mins or so, your lads gave up. Never looked out onto the pitch and thought its boys against men out of the there... I genuinely think its a mental issue. Being so close and not able to get over the line over the years takes its toll. It was the exact same here with us. A few years ago in limerick, Graeme Mulcahys place on the panel was in question. winning the all ireland lMO he was our most important player and more deserved of a player of the year nomination than Cian Lynch. He's a real leader and fights for every ball. Also one of the smallest men on the Limerick team. Limericks implementation of a game plan based around quick fast ball into the corners suited him immensely. Waterfords biggest problem is themselves at the moment. I sincerely hope that ye win an All ireland soon. Be wonderful to see. But a lot of work to be done first. skillet (Limerick) - Posts: 1063 - 09/08/2019 16:02:58 2223099 Link 0 |

However they are a small team comparatively. Look at the bench. Stephen Roche a beautiful little player but a midget. You right about the work. Hurling is all so a moment game. Start falling and go into free fall. Rising lifts all boats but can you lift enough to reach the summit. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2660 - 09/08/2019 17:20:04 2223128 Link 0 |
