Jesus two shocking teams.. Mayo are gone... Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 21/07/2019 15:56:00 2214008 Link 2 |
Well done Mayo. Routine win and job done. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13796 - 21/07/2019 15:56:17 2214009 Link 6 |
Critically for Meath in around 61 min they missed those two frees. Meath wilted after that and Mayo just pushed on, score flatters Mayo but a vital win for Mayo and another step forward for Meath. Good game to watch even with both teams poor forward play. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4953 - 21/07/2019 16:03:20 2214012 Link 0 |
Lesson No. 1: Game ain't over till it's over. Lesson No. 2: Football is definitely gone chronic. That was not a fun experience. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3148 - 21/07/2019 16:03:56 2214013 Link 0 |
Great to pull through in the end, though the margin is a bit flattering for Mayo. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 21/07/2019 16:07:13 2214016 Link 0 |
Football too fast? I wish bud, I wish.

Dublin game aside, I'd like to say that Meath have acquitted themselves very well in the super 8s. They looked like a football team today and have definitely got something to go forward with. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8748 - 21/07/2019 16:11:52 2214019 Link 7 |
Maybe a better midfielder, never a better footballer. Aidan was wrecked today and Seamus not matchfit. Not a lot of midfield options left to bring on for them unfortunately.

Horrible horrible match. Wally (Tyrone) - Posts: 926 - 21/07/2019 16:13:28 2214021 Link 5 |
Well if they do, I'm sure you'll be the first on here to crow about it. I honestly think if Mayo won a game by ten points you'd find fault in them.

He's wrecked every game it seems for the past five years. Offers absolutely nothing.

If Mayo ever won a game by that large a margin, they'd clearly have to be cheating. JOKE!!! And yes, you're probably right, but in fairness to Belclare, it's a lovely village, Canavans' serves a lovely pint, Cruach Ma is a great walk if you ever get the chance, and the old cemetery is well worth a visit. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3148 - 21/07/2019 16:35:23 2214037 Link 1 |
In fairness I think Galway, Armagh and Kildare need to take along hard look at themselves when these 2 teams are able to progress further than either of us.. That game probably had the worst ever level of skill ever on display in croke park at this stage of the championship and we couldn't get this far. O'Neill was man enough to fall on his sword, Walsh and Geezer, who I've alot of time for, and who both have proper quality players should really have questions to answer and starting to feel the pressure.. cuttothebone (Kildare) - Posts: 168 - 21/07/2019 16:35:40 2214038 Link 1 |
Mayo ended Galway in the opening 15 minutes. Today they put the squeeze on Meath for the final 15 and couldnt handle it. Its what big teams do to the smaller counties. BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 21/07/2019 16:37:10 2214039 Link 2 |
Your post makes no sense, and I'm not being snarky. There's a hanging participle in your second sentence that leaves the subject uncertain. If, as you say, Mayo put the squeeze on Meath for the last 15 minutes, it worked for Mayo: they outscored Meath 1-1, to 0-2 in that time period. Did you mean to say 'Meath couldn't handle it'? festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3148 - 21/07/2019 16:48:30 2214048 Link 2 |
Re the progress thats simply the luck of the draw and nothing else.

I don't know why posters are being so critical of Meath's performances in the Super 8. They have been very competitive but simply don't have the players on the bench to come on in the final quarter to help see out the game. For Mayo the veterans were the players who really drove the team on despite Keegan and Aidan O'Shea appearing not to be fully fit, or maybe carrying injuries. I feel sorry for Harrison, who seems to be a very good footballer but is not physically suited to the full-back position. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 21/07/2019 16:53:04 2214053 Link 1 |
In fairness, while today was a horrible spectacle, no-one can accuse Mayo of not getting there on merit. They had to beat two of the teams your reference, and they did it well. They've been playing every weekend for over a month now, and that's got to be affecting their performance. Meath on the other hand, after getting annihilated by Dublin, just had to beat Clare. That's the way the cookie crumbles, and all that, and more power to them. The competition structures in both codes have been fiddled with to the point that they make little sense; they're neither one thing nor the other, and that's not Meath's fault. But it certainly makes a bit of a joke of the so-called "Super" 8s. This format, surely, must go. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3148 - 21/07/2019 16:56:10 2214055 Link 2 |
You're right, I can see how the comments here would be perceived as being anti-Meath. I can only speak for myself, but my critique is not aimed at Meath, but the structure of the competition which for the second year of its existence has included teams that realistically just couldn't compete with the top four or five, which begs the question, why proceed with a structure that is inherently flawed, uncompetitive, and as a result, a poor spectacle.
