Plans For New Stadium In Connacht

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Connacht rugby are redeveloping the sportsground, they say they will allow Gaelic games. But I would take this with a pinch of salt. The proposed new high performance unit should be looked at by GAA. And they should also offer Pearse stadium to the Rugby lads when sportsground is being re built.

Not sure how gaelic games will fit as stadium doesnt have space for gaelic games
In what way should new high performance unit be looked at by GAA?
Connacht wouldnt take Pearse Stadium when sportsground is being rebuilt. They'll stay in sportsground

For Public relations the GAA should offer the Pearse stadium. The rugby lads will say no, but it will look good for the GAA- who sometimes have bad P.R.

They Sportsground pitch is much bigger than the usual rugby ground.Hurling and Gaelic football were played there regularly in the past.

Yes it was, that was all part of the plan building the stadium, explain how its a white elephant comparing to other GAA stadium that are rarely use, was Croke Park meant to stage every single Dublin game, no

Its longer than most, it dosn't come across on TV but there is plenty of room behind both goals.

I spend way too much time in the sportsground and the dead ball zones are not that big and the pitch isnt much bigger than typical rugby grounds

These proposed plans by the GAA for a new stadium in Connacht based near Galway City seem to be behind the pack particularly in light of two recent announcements.
The successful Comer Bros who sponsor Galway United have announced plans to build a new Centre of Excellence for United, to be one of the best of its type in the country, on lands purchased from Galway GAA. So the 102 acres of land at Mountain South Athenry, just off the M6 motorway which Galway GAA bought for €2.8 Million & spent another €535,000 on, was reportedly bought by the Comer Bros for between €750,000 & €1 Million recently & plans are now afoot to develop Galway United's Centre of Excellence there. The Comers are very successful & people who get things done, so brilliant foresight on their part & a massive boost for Galway United.
The other recent announcement, by Connacht Rugby to complete a €30 Million redevelopment of the Sportsground & a state of the art indoor training centre after agreement with Bord na gCon & the Ag Co-op, are already underway. Connacht Rugby CEO Willie Ruane launched a very professional presentation of the 12,000 capacity stadium with a huge media campaign in national & local media. They have already met with the Taoiseach in regards to funding & are about to hold public consultations. Staying at the Sportsground is a very clever move as they have massive commercial sponsorship within Galway City from the hospitality & financial sectors mainly. On match day the city is buzzing with people & they have tapped into that market commercially, their pre match razzmatazz & hospitality has also been very successful. Martin Breheny recently had an article suggesting Connacht Rugby co share & rent Pearse Stadium from Galway GAA but everyone knew that would never happen for a couple of reasons. 1/ Connacht Rugby would never have put their commercial revenue from the city business sector at risk by moving out to Salthill. 2/ Current GAA rules don't even allow ground rental or sharing of county grounds, so Connacht Rugby were never going to wait for the GAA to change the rule knowing the politics of the GAA & how long it can take to get things done. Probably difficult also to do business with an organisation whose CEO has recently resigned, who are millions in debt, whose rules don't even permit ground sharing, who don't have floodlighting & have had serious issues previously with planning for same, where there are serious issues with local residents on match days & who are awaiting a report from Croke Park on alleged financial irregularities.

Mega millions on the loose again, including big changes to P Ui C, well at least the profits from " no kids tickets" however small is being put to some use.

McHale Park cost Mayo a fortune ending up in a loan from Croke Park. Roscommon went through the same thing and Galway haven't a pot to p**s in because of Mountain South. Our financial irregularities about to be laid bare to the nation and probably be on par with Fr Ted in the next week or so and now there's talk of a stadium. Real money for struggling clubs should be the GAA's main focus. Bright shiny toys should be down the list of priorities."
Probably the best and most accurate comment on here is a long time.

The only thing the GAA have made money on in Pairc Ui Chaoimh is as a mass vaccination centre.

I remember Aogán Ó Fearghail when he became President saying one of his goals was to develop a top class stadium in North Leinster. Nothing really happened in that regard. The GAA focus must have changed to Connacht now

Let's get real though, Connacht rarely fills the stadia it has, hardly any need for a new one.

exactly, who cares about another "new stadium" oh sorry, its Connaught, yes lets give this loads and loads of time now, the other three provinces can take a hike....for 5 county province it has at least 2 high profile in Hyde and Salthill...no disrespect to the Sligo, Leitrim and McHale Park but I would assume all 3 have excellent grounds and facilities now too..

Galway GAA need a stadium in Galway city- Pearse stadium. And they don't have the money to build new ones elsewhere.

Sell off all current county grounds in Connacht and gather up all the seats and roofing materials they have.
Then build a 30'000 roofed stadium in Athenry and let rugby and soccer into it.

Apply for an NFL franchise (Connacht Jets/Raiders/RAMS) and European Super league club membership. It will pay for itself

If you build it - they will come
