What's this got to do with the Gleeson hurler of the year award? Man of the match is an RTE award and Hurler of the year is a GAA/GPA award. Not sure what point you are making with these links...

Michael Lyster will be missed. Charismatic man. Very laid back and relaxed. I remember bits of a metal structure falling down in the studio while the pundits were talking before some game. He just chuckled "the whole studio is falling apart here lads" and continued on as if nothing happened back to the analysis. Grey_Wolf (Leitrim) - Posts: 236 - 30/08/2018 16:18:15 2137713 Link 0 |
Don't really understand the plaudits. He was well paid but delivered mostly awkward and clunky performances. I remember him at the Galway reception last year and he looked like it was his first day on the job. It was cringe. He was no Tom McGurk, Bill O Herlihy. They were a different class completely. Joanne Cantwell is a big improvement. Sunday Game is an awful production. Lyster not the worst but is a part of a very stale outfit . Good luck to him and all but he is no loss. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 30/08/2018 17:27:42 2137727 Link 2 |
I've nothing against Austin Gleeson, he is a great hurler and best of luck to him.

I agree with a lot of that chief I work in the industry abd have done for close to 20 years now and there is an awful lot of gender quota stuff going on especially at RTÉ after all the negative attention it has gotten in that department. There's a big push on it regardless of the talent level. It's actually a completely redundant move as all it's done is create an atmosphere where more people feel hard done by. Positions should be based on talent not on what you have/don't have between your legs but there's a big social justice agenda going on and the broadcasting industry is gone into overdrive looking to prevent negative trending online and all it takes is the smallest story to create a snowballing-effect which can be very damaging in the eyes of advertisers looking to spend money I own my own production/editing company so I'm out of the office politics TF but know plenty within that buzz to know that there's a fair bit of biting the lip going on. Only so long that can go on.. I feel that Darragh Maloney is an unlucky fellow. A lot outside of his control worked against him and I think he's the superior to what's currently in place. That's my professional opinion. He's a commentator that I enjoy too, he injects enthusiasm into his broadcasting, very experienced chap and he served his time. Unfortunately it's an odd time now. I see it as regression rather than progression if I'm very honest. Truly hope it starts to balance off again because you're watching a very reactionary time at present and with that comes bad decisions. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20763 - 30/08/2018 18:48:39 2137743 Link 1 |
You're a brave man to go against the liberal agenda on here, the thumbs down brigade will be hammering the keyboards. I'm glad he's going, just wish he'd take Marty and the rest of the crew with him, we need the whole thing freshened up and get rid of the relics from another century.

Liberal agenda?? Can someone not have an honest opinion on here without it being called "the liberal agenda"? You certainly seem to think a lot of your own opinion. There is an OFF button on your remote if you have a look. You can liberally press it.

I'm with the two of you, I don't see what the fuss is. I think posters are getting nostalgic. I do think Joanne Cantwell is good too and some posters are unfairly saying she is getting the gig because of gender quotas. I think she is better than Maloney. RTE is very stale. The show are the All-Ireland hurling final was very poor and the 'awards' Section was just odd. Marty is winging it for years and getting away with it as is Ger Canning. Bill O'Herilihy was a far superior presenter and someone worth missing. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 31/08/2018 03:17:43 2137805 Link 1 |
Won't be sad to see the back of him...always was a poor presenter. Joanne Cantwell is worse with her nonsensical stats inputs..but it's endemic of their gaa coverage..canning is an awful commentator and can never hide his pro Dublin bias..sky are way ahead in terms of quality mayotyroneman (Tyrone) - Posts: 1821 - 31/08/2018 09:54:37 2137837 Link 1 |

Excellent post indeed, and I couldn't agree more in that Daragh Moloney would have been an excellent replacement, and if truth be told the outstandingh candidate. gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 31/08/2018 12:43:22 2137886 Link 1 |
Best to Michael, very professional guy. How did he put up with Brolly, Spillane, O"Rourke, time to drain the swamp. Not fair on Cantwell to have to put up with their nonsense. Darragh Moloney is also good and very versatile, plenty for him to do. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1736 - 31/08/2018 13:22:03 2137900 Link 0 |
Nothing wrong with Joanne Cantwell But for me it was a massive promotion from where she had previously been. It no doubt reflects Sky's/BBc's positioning of female broadcasters in prominent sports hosts/analysis positions RTÉ don't have an original bone in their body A little soon for her IMO and there were better placed broadcasters with more miles under their belt but I'm not surprised considering the push RTÉ have going on at the moment, the current climate within RTÉ benefited her greatly, right time, right place. To that I have very little doubt. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20763 - 31/08/2018 15:23:42 2137939 Link 2 |
Bill was a gentleman but his 'simple man' approach is unlikely to be seen again. I also think Cantwell is a stronger presenter than Maloney. I'm praising a Dub. - whatever next! Did she play football for Fingallions?

That's the problem, RTE copies everyone else so they are always late to the party with trends etc. I do think Joanne Cantwell is good though and very knowledgeable on Football and Hurling. Maloney is weak on hurling. Don't get me wrong I think he is good too and a better Football commentator than Canning who was never bothered, and Marty. Personally I think this is the promotion that brings gender balance / quota within RTE seriously into question, I think it was a massive promotion for Joanne that seriously outweighs the balance between her qualification for the job and Daragh Maloney's. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3179 - 01/09/2018 22:19:09 2138267 Link 0 |
Probably because Maloney is fronting the soccer these days, they didn't want him hosting the GAA too. I don't think Cantwell getting the job is a reflection on him, just think they maybe want a different face rather than the same person doing everything. Good luck to her.
