Looking back at the All Ireland finals in the 90s on youtube,etc. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 28/08/2018 11:11:45 2137019 Link 0 |
I think jerseys replaced the flags. Back then, there would be no more than a handful of replica jerseys, now come All-Ireland final time the replica jersey sells like hot cakes! StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 1836 - 28/08/2018 15:23:24 2137154 Link 0 |
No thanks, last thing I want at a match is to be sitting behind some idiot blocking my view with a flag 890202 (Wexford) - Posts: 1278 - 28/08/2018 15:45:36 2137169 Link 1 |
I remember the 2003 semi-final against Armagh was an unbelievable display of colour and flags from both sets of supporters. Even though the result didn't go our way that day it's still one of the most amazing atmospheres I've experienced. JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 28/08/2018 16:32:52 2137198 Link 0 |
Croke park security will send you to a holding centre for weeks for attempting to bring in a dangerous weapon like that these days SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2570 - 28/08/2018 17:27:54 2137221 Link 1 |
Back in the 80/90's GAA in Dublin was more "niche" Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 28/08/2018 18:08:57 2137236 Link 0 |
i think it was down v meath in 1991 which had flags on the canal and hill 16 ends which was an absolute sight to behold. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 30/08/2018 09:03:20 2137591 Link 1 |
Can see both sides of the debate but there's nothing more unsettling than the top of a bamboo pole dancing about in front of you - inches from your eyes. avonali (Dublin) - Posts: 1994 - 30/08/2018 13:47:16 2137663 Link 0 |

Funny you say that, if you read the small print in a match programme it actually says flags with sticks are not permitted within Croke Park! So technically stewards should be confiscating every flag they see outside the ground, but as Shakespeare might say, it's another GAA rule "honoured more in the breach than the observance"

Every day is a learning day. Learning both Shakespeare an Croke Park rules in one go.

Cork were by far the best, Soviet Union flags, US flags, Confederate flags, Japanese rising sun flags (pretty much any national flag that was mainly red or had red on white on it) mixed with the standard Red & white flags. In 1990 final the hill looked the great. The red and white really stood out. Not too many on display now and a lot of these look fairly cr*p, they almost have a corporate look, a bit like the flags handed out to Leinster and Munster Rugby supporters. The old school simple flags with just the 2 county/ club colours one after the other almost had a feel like a national flag for your area. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 1413 - 01/09/2018 19:31:32 2138216 Link 1 |
Yeah the flags were a cool feature, just watch 1999 hurling (it was a terrible game) final there a few weeks ago and seeing all the flags was a great site to see, they used to loads of confederate, japenese, american and Canadian flags, PyatPree (Cork) - Posts: 376 - 02/09/2018 12:12:50 2138326 Link 0 |
I was in awe of the 1993 final, I was born 92 so I grew up watching it on video tape, it was something spectacular. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 264 - 02/09/2018 14:03:15 2138343 Link 0 |
Derry used to wave Canada flags with the maple leaf in the middle PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 264 - 02/09/2018 14:04:45 2138345 Link 0 |
i dont think the confederate flag has a place at a gaa match.i loved the array of flags cork brought but that was one they could have left abhaile.
