Kildare V Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I can't believe there are people on here, trying to justify the GAA'S decision on this. Firstly to say that Newbridge isn't capable to hold the game because there is a greater interest in the game than capacity can hold is completely irrelevant. In no other sport would home advantage be taken away because a bigger crowd could fit in elsewhere. Secondly, why create a rule on home advantage, if it can be changed, then it's not really a rule. I love gaelic football, but this insistence on defending the indefensible in the GAA by some, is embarrassing.
On a sidenote, the logistics of all this haven't been taken into account. Tickets went on sale this morning, so if your from Cavan/Tyrone, you will be paying for a double-header priced ticket, what happens there, is a reduction on the price going to be given later? Also, what sort of crowed is expected for that game, surely the GAA will be operating at a massive loss in opening the ground for 10-15K to attend. Also, do Mayo have to be on the pitch ready for throw in at 7, to be awarded the game?

Absolutely delighted with Kildare's stand on this, and I really hope they see it out.
Let them give Mayo the walk over, the principal and Kildare's convictions is much more important.

Its about time that counties started standing up to GAA's money driven plan to deny teams home advantage based off much cash they can get through the turnstiles.
As has been said here, they moved Wicklow Dublin out of Augrim due to some rubbish about numbers. Let everyone buy a ticket, and if people miss out then tough, there will be other games.

This is the GAA legacy that Pauric Duffy has left us with. Whatever way they can milk more cash out of it they will.

I think if Mayo come out and stand with Kildare the Gaa will be caught on this one.

Mayo are in an awkward spot tho to be fair.

Portlaoise might be a good compromise

Kildare GAA have a responsibility to fight for the home game which will support local businesses and sponsors of Kildare GAA, but croke park not concerned with that............

this is not about mayo what so ever it's kildare and gaa mayo have been through this before in an all Ireland semi final so if mayo turn up in croke park they are perfectly right it's not their fault where match is played

Really impressed with Kildare's stance and actions on this issue and I think it is very clear the vast majority of GAA supporters and players are 100% behind Kildare . The GAA had better be careful and will have to make a u-turn on their decision pretty quickly as if they go against the majority of their members views (every parish across the country) in favour of the interests of their commercial partners, I have no doubt a lot of GAA people won't be as slow to encourage their children play other sports in the future. It could be the beginning of the end - certainly in Kildare. It is the basic principle of the GAA - community and equity for all members and this is likely only the start of this discussion in advance of the Super 8's and it is a discussion that needs to take place.

From a spectator's perspective imagine the atmosphere in a sold out Newbridge in a game that really could go either way compared to a half empty Croke Park - where would you rather be? For all those that cannot make it, it will be available on Sky so their viewing numbers will go through the roof - surely a no brainer to back track....

In the longer term, Kildare with their population and potential really do need to invest in a new stadium - their existing facilities are just not up to it and if they have any ambition to progress and compete with the Dubs etc in the future, a new 25k+ stadium is required and the least their players, supporters and future generations deserve. If they don't have the necessary funds which I doubt is the case, they should be supported by the GAA. So it is fair to say this debate does not reflect well on Kildare GAA either.

Lads, the capacity is 8 000, and so just about 2 000 on general sale.....for a watch that got have 30 000 at it?

I think it is a Croke Park match, but the GAA should have announced before hand that not all first out of the hand may get home advantage

It's hard not to be a cynic and think that through some behind closed doors discussion the Kildare CB will come out today and announce that they've no choice but to play in Croke Park.

This is a mess that the GAA have made for themselves. County grounds are either fit for purpose all of the time or none of the time. If Newbridge could host games in the league that test the capacity then surely they must be allowed to host any game come summer. Otherwise surely the GAA are liable for letting other league and championship games go ahead in Newbridge over the years?

It'd be great to see the Kildare County Board sticking to their guns on this but it's hard to see it going that way.

Replying To roundball:  "A lot of chat about all kinds of conspiracies, biases and corruption from the GAA and Sky but the real reason for this mess is our associations age old propensity for ad hoc administration. Literally making it up as the go along.

How is it in 2018 the GAA doesn't have an agreed set of criteria (capacity, facilities etc) for venues for fixtures at each stage of the championship? Kildare should have been made aware at the start of the season that St. Conleth's wouldn't be deemed suitable for a round 3 qualifier. Instead it seems they find out a few hours after they get a home draw against a county with huge travelling support.

This is not a conspiracy. It's plain old fashioned incompetence."
Agree 100%.

The arrogance of GAA top brass is breathtaking. Sean Kelly on the radio talking down to Kildare in an attempt to put manners on them. Offering them a financial incentive to abandon the agreed home advantage. How stupid do they think people are? The GPA should ask all players to strike this weekend in protest.

Kildare have often used Croke Park in the past when they had a big game without any problems , they don't have a ground in Kildare good enough for any big game, so whats different this time , just tactics to try and put Mayo off and get sympathy from world cup armchair supporters on social media who wont be going to the game anyway and properly have never been to Newbridge for a game in their lives or never in Croker either

This issue is quite clear from where I stand.

Kildare were first out & therefore get to play at home If they choose to do so. If the rules say different then fair enough but as I understand it those are the rules.

Issue enough tickets for the size of the ground & let the two counties distribute them as they see fit. No, there won't be enough to go around but so what.? There are never enough tickets for All Ireland finals either, some people don't get to go. Tough.

The GAA have no one but themselves to blame for this by not adding a rider that clearly allowed them to change a venue. Kevin McStay put it up to them about the Connacht final & they folded so nobody is going to take the arrogant crap they have been coming out with for years anymore.

I just hope Kildare see this through because they have support all over Ireland.

Should never have been dumped on our doorstep but the Gaa didn't have the stones to sort out their own mess. In fairness though it worked for them, they realized that the masses were blaming Meath and so stood idly by and faded into the background, it's incredible how many people were fooled by it.

Anyway, I sympathize with both Kildare and Mayo, I think they've been put in an ackward spot and far from blame either of those counties (as the Gaa desperately want people to do) I point the finger squarely at the Gaa. I'm sure they will fool some people though!

Why would Sky Sports prefer to broadcast a game or games from a less than half empty Croke Park than from a great atmosphere in Newbridge in a packed Conleth Park packed to the gates and a partisan home support? If they do have an undue influence here it's time for the GAA top brass to tell them what's what. Either way it's the GAA's job ultimately to decide where the game will be played. As for SKy Sport, their coverage is very good and it's fantastic compared to the, mostly average, coverage from RTE. At least you've a choice to get Sky Sports, the law doesn't oblige you to pay a licence to keep them in business.

Sorry you should read my post again. I am aware of the situation we backed ourselves into in 2010 and from that experience I am simply saying that Mayo need to be carefull as despite the fact it is not their fault, they stand to lose a lot of the goodwill that this Mayo team have built up over the last few years.

It would be a travesty if they stood by and let Kildare be kicked out and to advance on the back of that.

There are a lot of Meath supporters who admire this Mayo team including myself but their sportsmanship is now going to be tested and it will say a lot about them whatever way they react.

I think this will be resolved with Kildare playing in Croker to be honest, they will be looking for a sizable funds to assist with the redevelopment of Newbridge soon enough and can see some kind of deal being struck as the week goes on.

Sad, but its the way things work in a political organisation. Think there may be more to this then just a simple "we should play at home" issue, maximum leverage for redevelopment.

That's definitely the cynical way of looking at it.

I hope I'm wrong but I reckon will get a statement today from the Kildare CB saying that they've no choice and 'for the good of the competition' they'll have to fulfill the fixture etc etc.

Like I said I hope I'm wrong and Kildare stick to their guns.
