James Owens says he saw the Austin Gleeson incident. That implies he decided to ignore the rules of the game. I'd say Cork fans are particularly annoyed. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1922 - 15/08/2017 18:46:05 2033791 Link 10 |
I think he should be given a medal for standing up for what's right and sensible. The rule is rubbish. No one deserves to be automatically sent off for pulling a helmet. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 15/08/2017 19:01:04 2033798 Link 4 |
I guess that's up to the referees assessor. I think you can get demoted for poor performances. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 15/08/2017 19:05:02 2033802 Link 1 |
Should the linesman DC "patted" be suspended for not calling the refs attention to it at the time? Seeing as it was so egregious and all......

He's in an invidious position when his word decided if Austin Gleeson plays in or misses an All-Ireland Final.I can understand why Owens has acted as he has.The Gaa has to look against at it's disciplinary and suspension policies.

I would say that it brings the GAA into serious disrepute, only that they have been in that place a long, long time.

looking at the photo on the home page how can anyone say the rule about helmet interference is stupid or wrong, look how close Gleesons fingers are to the Cork players eye,he could have done serious damage,a poster said in trying to make out it wasnt too bad by saying the straps were open is also proved wrong,it should always remain a red card offence, the problem now is how can Owens ever send off player for the same offence, mooncat (Kilkenny) - Posts: 538 - 15/08/2017 19:41:17 2033827 Link 3 |
No he's not. Tell the truth. Players actions decide if he's suspended. As I said refs can make mistakes, actually it would not be normal if they didn't. We have to accept that. Even the most strident Waterford supporter would probably admit what Gleeson did was stupidity of the highest order. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1922 - 15/08/2017 20:18:30 2033845 Link 0 |
The referee is there to apply the rules, its not his job to decide whether a player plays in AI or not.

Ref didn't apply the rules!!! If he saw the incident it was a red card. If he didn't see it he should have handed it over to the CCC to make judgement. The GAA Rules and the applications of the rules and a complete joke.

The whole thing stinks to be honest. I would be in favour of abandoning video evidence altogether and just leave it to what hapoens on the day. At least youd have consistency then Malonemagic (Laois) - Posts: 817 - 15/08/2017 20:53:26 2033863 Link 0 |
Bad rule to begin with. Sets everyone up for a dirty kicking because there is no provision for severity of the foul. Simple a yellow card. However if the player is seriously injured and can not continue a red (that is automatic one game). If you really want to punish no return until the injured player is declared fit. Spot on, if he saw it & implemented the rule Cork would have been playing v 14 from early on. The fact that he saw it & didn't act shows he is not up to the standard & after tonight's decision, nor are the CCCC.

Every time a player pulls on the ball around other players heads or legs constitutes a danger. What about the shot in the testicles to Moran who was actually injured rather than speculation to what could have happened to the Cork player ? Your famous Tommy was the expert on helmet interference as he perfected it.

Not a bad idea. Can't use it when it suits. Either use it fairly for all or don't use it at all!!!

unfortunately both during the game and now in its aftermath Owens ......after what he did today with the CCC I doubt we will see him again on the inter county panel

O come on Galway man do not leave your great county down with bias. When it was Tadgh the rules were the rules and must be followed. Most posters. The linesman and officials have the call and their report must stand. Now when the rule says if the referee sees it o.k. (as is what occurred exactly with your man) there can be no further action we must ignore the rules. If his decision is correct is another debate. Philip Mahony heard the ref saying get up, tie you strap, nothing here. He would now have to lie to reverse his decision. He is also not allowed review video but again the media playing its part by slowing down the action and guess what was the picture on rte site. The tail end of the slowed down video. I know of one sport where they look at slowed down video but take in to account actual speed. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 3062 - 15/08/2017 21:26:44 2033898 Link 0 |
Should James Owens be suspended.. Really that's a matter for James Owens? I have no particular interest in witnessing the event. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 15/08/2017 21:51:36 2033909 Link 4 |
Canuck - two things, firstly it's now irrelevant as decision is made and gleeson will play so time to move on in that regard but secondly for Owens to say tie up your helmet shows a shocking disregard for what gleeson did...another inch and Meade could have lost an eye, we need to stop minimising tampering with helmets.....the full face guard was introduced to stop serious eye injury and tampering with them is dangerous, full stop while 90% of time no serious injury occurs what will the likes of you say when an eye is lost or seriously damaged........very concerning that a senior inter county ref has such disregard for safety of players and just illustrates how poor a ref Owens is
