Peter McKenna hits back at Michael Duignan

Peter McKenna totally missing the point, I am not an TV expert but would assume one would have to have a basic SKY package first of all before one could avail of the €10 one off purchase of any game on a one off basis. Whether Michael Duignan or I or anyone else has SKY is irrelevant, Michael Duignan said his father (for example) had not got SKY and missed the match on Sat night as a result. I was visiting an eldery relation Saturday evening and had to go home to see the match in my own house. Michael Duigan (or anyone else) is not solely responsible for whether their parents have SKY (or not)..Peter McKenna is being subjective in his reply hinting about Duignan going to watch the Lions Match etc on Sat morning..NOT everyone has SKY to avail of the one off purchase deal..I doubt very much if there is an "arrow" shaped analogue aerial or similar on Mr. McKennas house etc. etc. Fairplayalways (Offaly) - Posts: 1037 - 14/07/2017 16:25:47 2016593 Link

Just 4 years ago, before the SKY deal, Dublin drew with Kilkenny in the Leinster hurling semi-final. Dublin went on to win the replay beating Cats in championship for the first time in 50 odd years. Neither game was televised by RTE (or TV3). Where was Michael Duignan's outrage then? It was hardly mentioned because RTE couldn't (then or now) show EVERY match that people want to see. In fact, there was only one camera in O'Moore Park which made the highlights of those games almost unwatchable. It's called GAAGO and costs €140/year or €10/game (a little cheaper in the UK I think) but it's not available in Ireland for tv rights issues. It's not quite the GAA's own channel because it just uses the coverage from RTE and Sky. Having a channel 100% owned by the GAA would lead to pretty boring and one dimensional analysis though. More than the 45 being shown now. There's competition rules that mean they can't have a monopoly on coverage. The GAA has control over what's part of the rights deal that's getting negotiated. TV3 were bidding for the packages that RTE and Sky were. Sky aren't some freebie bonus. The same story you told from 4 years ago could happen today. For me the big thing about this deal is that fewer people are watching GAA than they used to now. According to Paul Rouse Sky's getting about 1/10 the viewing figures in Ireland compared to TV3. 1 big match on TV3 could get average numbers of 400k people. Sky's big games break 50k. Other smaller games on Sky get 10k-20k viewers in Ireland. A big match on TV3 isn't far off getting the same total viewers than all Sky's games in a season. TV3's viewers are all unique viewers also. The GAA has sold itself cheaply too. Their take from media in their 2013 accounts was just over €10m, their take in 2014 was a little less than €10.5m. Something McKenna said in the interview that worries me is how the GAA needs the Sky deal to fund its development projects. To me that sounds like we have to sell to the highest bidder and not because we choose to. The highest bidder is not always the best bidder. I'd be worried in the long term interest in the game if Sky were to get a greatly increased number of exclusive matches in the future. Duignan joins another long list of spoofers who have embarrassed themselves on The Sunday Game. There is no way terrestrial t.v. can show every game & for someone who doesn't have Sky Sports there are still options. 1. Go to the bloody game. 2. Go to a pub or a family member or neighbour who has Sky Sports. 3. Watch on cricfree. 4. Listen on the radio as we have done for years. It's just speculation on my part but there have been a few statements out of Croke Park in the last year or so sounded like things are tight enough on it. There was an article last year about falling attendance had me worried. The very quick turnaround in saying that we wouldn't be moving from free to air to ending up signing a deal with Sky. The rushed along Super 8 proposals. They came out of the blue and really seemed like a revenue spinner in that they didn't actually address many of the core issues around the championship structure. Speaking of GAA money, does anybody know what the story is with player endorsements? Not querying what players make, they're entitled to everything they get as far as I can see.
