McVey hoping for winning send-off
November 25, 2009
Loup star Paul McVey is hoping to claim an Ulster club football medal before he flies out to Australia next Tuesday.
The half forward was due to leave these shores last September, only to postpone those plans to assist Loup in their successful Derry SFC campaign and their subsequent march to Sunday's provincial final against St. Gall's.
"I was meant to be away two weeks before the county final. I suppose nobody thought we'd still be playing football at this stage. If it goes to a replay, I'll just cancel the flight again, it's no big deal," he said in the Irish Examiner.
McVey has fond memories of Loup's 2003 Ulster club triumph which came at St. Gall's expense.
"I was 16, but I wasn't allowed to play. I was still under 16 and you couldn't play two grades above yourself. By the time the All-Ireland semi-final came, I was 17 but I hadn't been part of the squad.
"It was unbelievable, though, the euphoria around the Loup, the fervour of the whole thing. It was definitely special for the people of the Loup. I suppose I just timed it badly," he laughed.
