National Hurling League Division "4"- 2011

Round "2"
Played at Cavanacarragh Hurling Park
Sunday 20 February 2011

Fermanagh, 2 gls. 14 pts;
Longford, 1 gl. 7 pts.

Proving beyond all doubt that the previous week ends Fermanagh's run away win over Cavan, the Ernesiders last Sunday handed down another emphatic victory over their Longford visitors with a telling final score if 2 goals 14 points to 1 goal 7 points for last years Lory Meagher winners. In this reaffixed venue at Lisbellaw's splendid Cavanacarragh Hurling Park it was they host Fermanagh's right half forward Ryan Bogue who slipped over two well taken opening points from frees. However the Leinster midlander's mid-fielder Eoin Donnellan began to begin to peg back the modest scoring difference between the sides, with point from a free. Moments later he was joint author of in this mini Longford scoring spree, when his team mate and full forward Joe O'Brien popped over the Leinster side's second point from a free to bring about this games first draw. Still in the very early stages of this enthralling match, it was the turn of ace scorer and right full forward Sean Corrigan to put Fermanagh modestly back in front, with a splendid point score from play. The tit-for-tat scoring continued, when Longford's Eoin Donnellan scoring ace returned to the plate, with his second point from a free, and the games second draw. Seemly against the run of play the Leinster mainlanders' seized the scoring initiative and now briefly went in front with two splendidly taken points from Joe O'Brien, to put the Longford lads in front with a score of five points to 3 points. However it was the Erneside scoring forward scoring duo of Ryan Bogue and Sean Corrigan, who brought about this games third draw of five points apiece.

With this now hectically played match entering its second quarter, the visiting side now dynamically stepped up their scoring initiative, when their centre half forward Michael Morrissey banged home the Longford lad's only goal. Barely had the ball being sent downfield, when it was assiduously passed into the visitors back line by right full forward Sean Corrigan, to his team mate and Fermanagh left full forward Shane Mulholland who grabbed the slithor and blasted the ball into the Longford net for the Fermanagh lad's first goal, and bring about this game's fifth draw of 1 goal 5 points each. With the games opening fast ending, it was the host side that seized the scoring initiative, when their big full forward Brendan McGarry popped over his side's sixth and seventh points. On the verge of half time it was the Erne side's first scorer Ryan Bogue, who raced up to the plate for his third and his side's eight point. A far from complacent Fermanagh side now briefly paused for a half time break.

Fermanagh Step Up Their Scoring.

In an almost cordon copy to this games opening minutes it was the host Fermanagh side, who stepped up to the scoring plate, when their mid-fielder John Duffy pucked his first and the Ernesiders ninth point. However the far from defeated Longford side now attempted cut into the modestly scoring gulf with their opponent's, with Joe O'Brien popping over his second and his side's sixth point. Immediately Fermanagh's Shane Mulholland, who clipped over his sides tenth point from play. In their last successful scoring initiative of this match, the Leinster side's Eoin Donnellan pucked over his and his team's last score of this game, a well taken seventh point. Though there was twenty five minutes left to full time, the Fermanagh host's were not intent to cease scoring hostilities for one nanosecond. With the early second half's score sheet now registering the Fermanagh host's with 1 goal 10 points to 1 goal 7 points for Longford, the Ernesiders now grabbed this game by the scruff of it's neck. The entire host's scoring originated from their defence, with excellent backs like Cathal McGarry, the veteran Fergus Bannon, the youthful and talented Kevin Mohan. The diminutive but heroic Daniel Teague who tackled men who were literally head and shoulders, but not in hurling talent above the wee man. The team's captain and engine room of the team Mark Slevin supplied unerringly accurate slithor to fiercely attacking forwards. Sharing mid-field birth the latter was John Duffy, who now was put the outcome of this match beyond all doubt. Firstly with a well taken eleventh point for his side, and then the coup-de-grace for his now wilting opponents, a fantastic close in goal from literary metres out. With the latter massive score, the Fermanagh side went all out to copper fasten their scoring grip on this game, with additional three point scores from Shea Curran, replacement Oisin Boyle and the final fourteenth score like Fermanagh's first was claimed by their ace scorer Ryan Bogue. With final whistle no being blown minutes; it was a very triumphant Fermanagh Senior team that trooped off the Cavanacarragh pitch to remain top Division "4" of the National Hurling League of 2011. For the Erneside hurlers it is a two spell off from inter county hurling, when they play host to South Down in Round "3" of the National Hurling League. For most these hurlers the will no rest from hurling as they will pitched into postponed games in the Ulster Club Senior Hurling League of 2011.
