Dublin great Ciarán Kilkenny has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Castleknock clubman confirmed his decision following Dublin's All-Ireland SFC semi-final loss to Kerry, ending a remarkable spell in the blue jersey that saw him establish himself as one of Dublin's all-time greats.

Kilkenny leaves the inter-county stage with an extraordinary list of honours, having won eight All-Ireland SFC titles, 13 Leinster titles, six Allianz National Football League crowns and six All-Star awards.

Announcing his retirement, Kilkenny described representing Dublin as "the greatest honour" of his life.

"It has been the greatest honour of my life to play for Dublin, a dream I've had since childhood," he said. "When I turned down the opportunity to play professional sport in Australia, it was because I knew that representing my club and county would always mean more to me."

The 33-year-old reflected on the friendships he forged throughout his career and the privilege of sharing a dressing room with some of the game's greatest players.

"I have been fortunate and privileged to share a dressing room with so many legends of the game and I've made brothers for life," he said. "To those beginning your journey with Dublin GAA, I hope it brings you as much fulfilment as it brought me."

Kilkenny also paid tribute to Dublin supporters, thanking them for their unwavering backing throughout his career, while acknowledging the influence of managers Pat Gilroy, Jim Gavin, Dessie Farrell and Ger Brennan, along with their respective backroom teams.

He also expressed his gratitude to his club, Castleknock GAA, where his football journey began.

"My thanks to my club, Castleknock GAA, where it all began, and to every opponent I've had the privilege of playing against," he said. "The friendships, stories and sense of community the GAA has given me are worth far more than any result."

Kilkenny reserved special thanks for his family and partner Rebekah, acknowledging the support they provided throughout his playing career.

"Most importantly, thank you to my family and my partner Rebekah. From my father instilling in me a love of Dublin and the GAA, to my mother and sisters supporting me every step of the way, none of this would have been possible without you."
