Jim Gavin says there will always be a place for Diarmuid Connolly in the Dublin football squad.

Bar a substitute appearance against Mayo, the inimitable attacker has been conspicuous in his absence from the Dubs camp so far in 2018, leading to speculation that his intercounty career could be all but over. However, Gavin today told RTE that he wants to see the brilliant 30-year-old back on Dublin duty:

"Diarmuid, over the last number of weeks, just hasn't been available for club or county activity. We respect that decision and I hope everybody else does as well. We play an amateur sport.

"The door will always be open for Diarmuid and hopefully we see him back playing gaelic games in the not too distant future."
