Senior Football
The Seniors beat Kilcoo in the League Final under the Newry lights on Friday and created history bringing the first of the two major trophies in Down to Dunavil.
Ireland and Down triple All Ireland winning boss Peter Mc Grath has worked the oracle at humble An Riocht delivering the Mourne club both the Division Two and Division One League Titles in an eleven month period of unparalleled success. Mind you he will be the first to acknowledge the contribution of returned Aussie Rules star Martin Clarke to his home club in terms of boosted morale, score making and score taking over the past month.
An Riocht certainly went the hard way about securing this first ever League Title. Trailing three one, then ten five and with star forward John Clarke harshly red carded just before the break the champions produced a second half display of courage and guile to stun the favourites and bring the cup home to Mourne.
Kilcoo were the more purposeful side at the start. Marty McClean burst through to take a Conor Laverty pass and score their first point. An Riocht replied with Martin Clarke pointing after a strong solo from James Cunningham but it was Kilcoo who were enjoying the better of the early exchanges and finding space inside the Mourne defence though Sean Kelly and Gary McEvoy both opted to point when faced with the imposing figure of county keeper Brendan McVeigh in the An Riocht goals.
Then eight minutes in An Riocht struck for their first goal. Martin Clarke was the architect with a good pass to John Clarke and he squared the ball to Chris Killen who carried it in and placed a great shot wide off Emmett Devlin in the Magpies goals. The Clarkes combined again for John to hoist over a point and An Riocht were right back in the match.
Conor Laverty leveled with two points in quick succession and after An Riocht had spurned a goal chance at the other end Kilcoos number six Aidan Branagan advanced to restore their lead. Laverty fisted another and then in the twenty fifth minute Laverty finally engineered a goal. Once more free inside, this time he held the ball up and jinking bided his time for support to arrive in the shape of Paul Devlin who with Mc Veigh drawn to Laverty had the simplest of tasks to finish Lavertys fist pass to the gaping net.
Paddy Cole fired over from distance and John Clarke rode a hefty challenge for another pointed response to leave a goal between the teams.
From that score Clarke saw red for an indiscretion signaled by the umpire and An Riocht went in with fourteen men.
At the break Pete McGrath switched Martin Clarke to full forward and Kilcoos extra man doubled marked him thus making no constructive contribution to the Magpies cause.
An Riocht restarted with Chris Killen taking a Martin Clarke pass to point. Then in the thirty fifth minute the roof almost came off the stand when Clarke goaled to put his team ahead. The move began near the dugouts with Paul Sherry dispossessing a Kilcoo attacker and releasing Paddy Cole down the line, he then slipped the ball inside to substitute Kieran McVeigh and he helped it on over the top where clever Clarke with two defenders hanging off him and the keeper racing out to crunch him deftly slid the ball along the greasy grass to the net. Neil Doran added a pointed free and a three point deficit had become two point advantage.
Kilcoo made a couple of changes to try and get back into the match but the next chance fell to the leaders when Emmett Devlin fumbled and Kieran McVeigh arrived just too late to force the loose leather to the net.
Paul Devlin from a free and a brilliant long range effort leveled the match for the fifteen men with ten minutes to go. An Riocht defended deep sometimes only Clarke was in the Kilcoo half and the Magpies could not find a way through the congested An Riocht half of the field. The vital next score fell to An Riocht with Clarke attracting defenders before slipping the ball to James Cunningham who pointed the Mourne men ahead with seven minutes remaining.
Momentum fully restored An Riocht swept forward again, Clarke still received the attention of three Kilcoo defenders leaving space for others to build a promising attack. Paddy Cole took possession just over the halfway line and in one movement looked up and placed a perfect pass into the hands of Clarke who shrugged off his marker, took a stride forward and lobbed the advancing keeper for a goal quite magnificent in its simplicity, creation and execution.
With four added minutes flashing on the fourth officials board An Riocht defended strongly and hit on the break. Sean Kelly did register a late free but this was only Kilcoos third score of the second half and nowhere near enough to see off the determined challenge of the fourteen men. Indeed it was An Riocht in possession and on the attack when the referee brought proceedings to a close.
