Senior Football The Seniors beat newly crowned county champions Mayobridge, 0-18 to 0-9, in the Division One semi-final in Newcastle under lights on Thursday. Mayobridge were short two of their championship team and it took a really great display to knock them out of the playoffs. An Riocht formed a guard of honour for Mayobridge coming onto the field but once the first whistle blew we set about dismantling their challenge. Early scores from twin attacking threats John Clarke and Paddy Cole got us off to a good start and when John Quinn converted a fifth minute free, Martin Clarke replied in kind. Robbie Coulter from play and placed ball then edged the Bridge in front for the first and only time in the match about midway through the half. Rampaging half back Joe McVeigh responded with a point and Neill Doran leveled before John Clarke fisted us into a lead never surrendered. Liam McVeigh and John Clarke added further points before John Quinn left a goal in it in the twenty third minute. That goal almost arrived for us when Paddy Cole got inside the Bridge defence but pulled his shot narrowly wide of the advancing Sean Fetherstone. Neil Doran and Martin Clarke made up for the miss with points apiece but in added time Noel Sexton and John Quinn cancelled these scores to leave three points in it at the break. The introduction of Benny Coulter at halftime should have rallied his side but after a couple of early chances came to nothing, they suffered something of a collapse while James Colgan continued to dominate at midfield. John Clarke and James Cunningham pointed at the other end. Even when Mickey Linden came on the Bridge struggled to find the spark to ignite a revival. Martin Clarke electrified the big crowd with a tremendous burst of speed and a shot that crashed off the inside of the post and away to the wing where Chris Killen collected and swung over possibly the best point of the night. Neil Doran, from a free and a fifty, put us eight clear at the three quarter mark and man of the match John Clarke and substitute Kieran McVeigh put ten points between the teams with ten minutes to play. Mayobridge had their moments but found our half back line of Joe and Liam McVeigh and team captain Deaglan O'Reilly in magnificent form and when they did get in the full backs defended with great discipline giving away few frees. Robbie Coulter and sub Barry Garvey pulled back late consolation points before Kieran McVeigh rounded off the scoring with our eighteenth point. Team & scorers Brendan McVeigh; Paul Sherry, Aidan Flanagan, Fergal Doyle; Joe McVeigh 0-1, Liam McVeigh 0-1, Deaglan O'Reilly; James Colgan, James Cunningham 0-1; Neil Doran 0-4, Martin Clarke 0-2, Chris Killen 0-1; Paddy Cole 0-1, John Clarke 0-5, Noel McArdle. Subs Michael Trainor, Kieran McVeigh 0-2. Fridays final against Kilcoo will be the biggest game for An Riocht since our Senior Championship appearance in 1984. Seconds Football This Seconds have no game this week. U20 Football We play the winners of the Shamrocks v Clann Na Banna match in the 'A' quarter finals on Sunday 28th October. Minor Football The B FC Final took place in Rostrevor on Saturday when Clonduff beat us 2-11 to 2-6. Clonduff were made sweat for some fifty minutes before pulling clear. We took the midfield plaudits with Chris Killen and Conor Phillips dominating the first half but such was the paucity of our attack we never looked like going on to win. Conor was marked by two men after the break and this ended his effectiveness while we failed to capitalize on the spare man. Clonduff led seven one before a twenty fifth minute penalty goal from Christopher brought us back into it on the scoreboard and five minutes later he burst through for a second goal and at the break the teams were level, 1-5 to 2-2. We kicked too many wides on the restart and over the final quarter hour Clonduff took control of the proceedings. Shane Sloan, Conor Doyle and Paul Allen battled manfully at the back for us. Team E Burns; S Sloan, C Doyle, S Corr; R Cunningham, S White, P Allen; C Killen 2-2, C Phillips; C Cole 0-1, D White, M Spiers 0-1; K Morris, P Gartland 0-1, D Flanagan 0-1. Subs G Keenan, B Allen, C Cunningham, K Mathews, M Clarke, D White. U13 Football On Sunday the U13 team had Ballyholland as visitors. The first half was fairly even with An Riocht just 1-6 to 1-4 ahead at the break but by the finish we led 3-10 to 2-4. This was a really good team performance with everyone playing their part. Team N Murnion; R Magee, A Donnelly, N McComiskey; R Spiers, R McAlinden 0-1, D Clarke; J O'Rourke, D Doyle 1-2; B Rodgers, A White, M O'Rourke; C Morgan 0-1, J Reilly 2-5, C McConville 0-1. Subs C Campbell, K Sloan, R White, D Morgan all played. AGM The An Riocht Annual General Meeting will take place at 7pm on Friday 9th November. A pre AGM thought: Do You Just Belong? Are you an active member, the kind that would be missed? Or are you just contented that your name is on the list? Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the crowd? Or do you stay at home and crib both long and loud? Do you take an active part to help the club along? Or are you satisfied to be the kind to just belong? Do you even go to visit a member who is sick? Or leave the work for just a few and then talk about the clique? There is quite a programme scheduled that means success if done and it can be accomplished with the help of every one. So attend the club regularly and help with head and heart. Don't just be a member but take an active part. Think this over member, are we right or are we wrong? Are you an active member or do you just belong? Bursaries The GAA has unveiled details of a new National Bursaries scheme for students attending Higher Education colleges. The new scheme will be open to members of the Association who are attending a full-time Higher Education course (except those who hold another GAA-related or college scholarship/bursary) and who are active participants in their Higher Education club. It is envisaged that recipients will be selected on the basis of their playing commitment and administrative or coaching commitment to the college club. Twenty per cent of all awards in each province each year will be granted to students excelling in the areas of coaching and administration. Further information and application forms for this year's scheme are currently available to download from www.gaa.ie All completed forms should be returned to the relevant Provincial Council and the closing date for application will be November 1st 2007. Table Quiz Having failed to muster a Scor Na nOg entry we would really like to take part in the annual Youth Board table quiz on Monday 29th October in Castlewellan. It has been some years since there was a major inter-club event and this has left a big gap in the annual life of a lot of youth groups. This year it is hoped to begin to put that right. The event this year will have just three events: Table Quiz, Team Challenge and Y Factor. Each event will be run off locally by local steering groups made up of an SELB Worker supported by a team of locally-recruited 15 - 18 year olds. The winners of each of these four regional events will then go to Newry in February to compete in the regional finals. The Table Quiz will be open to teams of four players who should be aged 13 to 15, age groups for 'Top Club' are all 'on the day'. For this event clubs may enter more that one team with the maximum entry being dependant on the entries for the local event. The 'Team Challenge' is aimed at the older members and young leaders. It is open to teams of six aged 11 to 13. At each event the teams will be faced with a minimum of four tasks that will challenge their physical and mental ability. It will require imagination, creativity and above all else a sense of fun. All tasks are designed to test the group's effectiveness at working as a team under pressure and against the clock! The Y Factor is a celebration of youth club member's talents and creativity. It brings together singers, dancers, comedians, bands, martial arts displays and drama. This is deliberately the last event on the calendar to allow all the hard work and practice to get performances up to scratch as they compete for a place in the Grand Final in Newry Arts Centre in February 2008. The event is open to young people in both junior (11 - 13) and Senior (14 - 18) categories. Local Finals will be as follows: October -Table Quiz; November-Team Challenge; January YFACTOR The Regional Final will be in Bosco Youth Centre and Newry Arts Centre in February. Finals of the Table Quiz and Team Challenge will take place in the morning of Saturday, 9 February in Bosco YC. Y Factor finalists will have that morning to rehearse, discuss lighting requirements with the Arts Centre technical staff and receive coaching and direction in readiness for the show. Lunch will be provided for all participants. Living History KYC members - Paddy, Gerard, Declan, Paul, Anthony, Kevin, Andy, Stephen, Conor, Daryl, Wayne, Eric & Sheila - attended the 'Living History' Book Launch and Exhibition in the Clinton Centre Enniskillen on Friday where they met the U.S. Consul Susan Elliot, Bill Fleming of the UUJ Community Youth Work Team, Breidge Gadd from Big Lottery Fund, Paddy Mc Ateer President of Hostelling International NI and received certificates to mark their work on the project. Life Andy, Peter and Gerard have begun training with local firefighters as part of the Life project. Canoeing There is an opportunity for aged 12 to 18 to take part in a canoeing course at Warrenpoint Swimming Baths as part of NMDC 'playing for peace' project. Anyone interested needs to let us know as soon as possible.
