Down on the way up
September 04, 2006
Antrim 6-4
Down 5-8
Few games will give as much value for money as the All-Ireland Minor B camogie final in Casement Park on Friday 1st September. It had everything - brilliant individual skills, some superb score-taking by both sides, 11 goals and Down victors by a single point courtesy of a 59th minute goal from full-forward Sara Louise Carr - daughter of dual All-Ireland football medallist Ross. Yes it was decided right at the death after a pulsating game of changing fortunes. Down opened strongly and were probably the better team in the first half, although 7 wides left them trailing 2-2 to 1-4 at the break.
But what an impact they made in the first 3 and a half minutes of the second half, scoring 3 goals - a Clare Quinn effort sandwiched between two from Aoibhne O'Neill.
Amazingly the Saffrons recovered. Bronagh Orchin shot a goal in the fifth minute and two from substitutes Emma McMullan and Aileen Martin closed the gap to a single point as the game entered the final 10 minutes. In the 54th minute, Racquel McCarry caught a high ball on the 20 metre line and swiveled to find the net for a goal worthy of any occasion.
However it wasn't enough and Sara Louise Carr's brilliant overhead double from a Lisa McPolin centre won the day for the Mourne County.
