Down's Pete McGrath
Down minor manager Pete McGrath has heaped praise on Newry teenager Shay McCartan. The youngster who was a pivotal member of the successful St. Colman's College side in 2010 aswell as the Down minor panel this year, has been catching the eye with English championship side Burnley of late. McCartan was an unused substitute in the Clarets 2-1 win over MK Dons on Tuesday night.

Speaking to The Irish News, Mc Grath hopes to have the youngster available for selection next year. "He's still eligible, but it depends on the draw and when you play", "There's a small window of opportunity to get him into the squad and get him bedded in. But hopefully circumstances will be in our favour."

The two time All Ireland winning boss believes the youngster has got what it takes to be an exceptional player. He also believes he has a unique eye for goals..

"I have no doubt that if he had been playing in Ireland, playing Colleges football, playing for his club and going through the normal processes of any young Gaelic footballer, that he has all the attributes to be a really top class player."

"His pace stood out, and his ability to take goalscoring opportunities. He's very aware of the possibilities when the ball is in that area, and the first thing on his mind would be 'goal', rather than laying it off."
