A Jerome Johnston goal in the first period of extra-time proved the difference as holders Kilcoo came through a hard-fought battle with Glen of Derry to qualify for another Ulster club SFC final - 1-11 to 0-11.

Extra time was needed to separate the Down and Derry champions after a dour 60 minutes ended in a 0-8 apiece stalemate at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh tonight.

The Magpies will now put their title on the line against Derrygonnelly – who defeated Clann Eireann by 3-11 to 1-11 in their semi-final – in the provincial decider which is scheduled to be played on Sunday, 16 January.

Johnston goaled nine minutes into extra-time when he blasted the ball to the net after a turn over from a short kickout which went astray – it was the decisive score as Kilcoo used their experience to telling effect to see out the remainder of the contest where defences were firmly on top.

This was followed up by a second point by wing-back Miceal Rooney to leave Kilcoo three points up at the midway stage in extra-time, 1-9 to 0-9.

Scores were hard to come by at both ends of the field and only three points were scored in the final 20 minutes of normal-time – Kilcoo looked to have done enough to progress in the regulation period as they led by 0-8 to 0-6, but efforts from Danny Tallon (free) and Emmett Bradley forced the additional 20 minutes.

With Glen clubman Mickey Moran managing Kilcoo, the sides were even level at half-time in normal-time at 0-4 each.
