Gaeil Fhánada Le Chéile - Part 4

We are delighted to launch the fourth installment of our hugely popular Gaeil Fhánada Le Chéile programme.

Since we launched it in 2017, we've had:

Year 1 - 28 members.

Year 2 - 55 members.

Year 3 - 62 members.

It's aimed at Fanad exiles around the world (Ireland and abroad) and allows them to reconnect with and recontribute to the club.

There's some fantastic incentives again this year and we are calling on all our exiles to join this year.

If you're interested in hearing more or joining for the upcoming year, just get in touch with us.

The go live date is tentatively set as September 6th. All funds raised go directly towards club development and this initiative has been hugely positive and beneficial for the club in recent years.

Seniors secure league playoff spot

Gaeil Fhánada 4:13

Naomh Colmcille 2:07

A Michael Sweeney goal in the first thirty seconds of today’s encounter with Naomh Colmcille set the tone for the game.

There were three changes to side that drew in Malin a fortnight ago, with Brandon Mc Clafferty, Liam Mc Grenaghan and Eoghan Carr coming in for Paddy Carr, James Gallagher and Jimmy Coyle. The Gaels were dominant in the opening exchanges and found the net with their opening attack. Some neat passing, coupled with a fortunate break allowed Michael Sweeney the simple task of slotting the ball to the net from close range. Two quick points followed, Mark Mc Ateer played a short free kick and swung the ball over with his left foot on the return, before Jonny Friel fired home a neat point from inside the D. Both sides wasted a couple of chances before the Gaels’ second goal arrived courtesy of Alan Mc Ateer. Brandon Mc Clafferty, making his first start of the season offered plenty width to the Gaels attack, and found himself in a pocket of space in behind the Naomh Colmcille defence. A lovely pass from Mark Mc Ateer found him, and although his effort was thwarted, Alan was on hand to bury the loose ball to the net. The Gaels scored kept coming, and Shaun Kerr kicked a stylish point after seven minutes to make it a nine point game. Naomh Colmcille had initially struggled to win their own kickout, but began to get more of a foothold. Willie Gillespie saw a bit more ball, but it was midfielder Daniel Clarke who kicked the first Naomh Colmcille score in the 11th minute. The sides exchanged a further point apiece before the water break, Shane Monaghan converting a free from the Newtown based side before Michael Sweeney looped an effort over the black spot for the hosts. Monaghan didn’t get much supply for the visitors, but he carried a threat inside, and an exquisite Daniel Clarke pass escaped the Gaels full back line and fell into Monaghan’s grasp on twenty one minutes. He gave Eoin Mc Gonigle no chance with a tidy finish. That seemed to jolt Gaeil Fhánada back into action, and they hit four scores in the next four minutes, two of which were three pointers. Ryan Mc Gonigle curled an effort over the bar firstly, and from the resulting kick out Eoghan Carr won a huge turnover before being fouled. The ball was transferred through the hands of Michael Sweeney, Darren Mc Elwaine, Seamie Friel and Alan Mc Ateer before Jonny Friel finished the ball to the net. The following attack yielded a penalty. Mark Mc Ateer fed Eoghan Carr who was upended, and Seamie Friel made no mistake from the spot. Eoghan Carr added a point, before Reece Duncan fired over a very impressive score for Naomh Colmcille to break the Gaels’ momentum. The industrious Darren Mc Elwaine added the final point of the opening period to leave the hosts with a comfortable 13 point lead.

Mark Friel was introduced at the break for the hosts. Seamie fired over an early point, but suffered a leg injury shortly after and was replaced by Paddy Heraghty. The tempo after half time certainly didn’t match the first half but the Gaels kept the scoreboard ticking over. Liam Mc Grenaghan was moved into the forward line during the second half and pointed after five minutes. Shane Monaghan converted a Naomh Colmcille free for his second point of the afternoon, but further Fanad points came from Brandon Mc Clafferty and a Mark Mc Ateer free before the water break, although it was Clarke for Naomh Colmcille who had the final say of the third quarter.

The game moved towards it’s inevitable conclusion from that point. Liam Mc Grenaghan was upended close to goal, and he tapped over the resulting free before Naomh Colmcille were awarded a penalty. Eoin Mc Gonigle dived low to save from Shane Monaghan, but the Naomh Colmcille attacker slotted home the rebound. Daniel Clarke pointed another free for the visitors but it was Mark Mc Ateer who had the final say, splitting the posts from play as the game entered injury time.

It was a solid display from the Gaels, who got out of the blocks early and did the majority of the work in the opening period. Ryan Mc Gonigle had a good afternoon while it was great to see all six starting forwards get on the scoresheet. Eoin Mc Gonigle’s kick outs were also very good throughout the hour. Naomh Colmcille were best served by Daniel Clarke, Shane Monaghan and Reece Duncan.

Other division 3 results this weekend saw Burt defeat Malin, Four Masters get the better of Moville, Buncrana see off Naomh Bríd and Letterkenny Gaels overcome Red Hughs. Neither Letterkenny Gaels or Gaeil Fhánada can now be caught by any of the rest of the pack with one game remaining which means it will be a battle of the Gaels to decide who joins Buncrana in Division 2 next season. The final game of the regular season will be against Red Hughs next weekend.

Well done to the lads on their victory and securing their place in the playoff game. Plenty to look forward to in the weeks to come.

Bundoran claim the spoils in u16 affair

Bundoran 9:09 Gaeil Fhánada 5:10

Our u16 team finished out their season with a long trip to Bundoran on Tuesday evening. Although a much depleted team travelled with 13 players, the girls put in a huge effort throughout the hour and can certainly hold their heads high after a great team performance, which showed their spirit, courage and determination right until the bitter end.

Gaeil Fhánada started brightly, and opened the scoring through Caitlin Heraghty. Caitlin, playing in the unfamiliar role of centre forward found the back of the net in the second minute. It wasn’t long before the hosts responded in kind, but the Gaels kept their bright start going and found themselves four points up after five minute. Bláthnaid Mc Ateer found the back of the net for her fourth goal in three games before Caitlin fired over the bar. Gaeil Fhánada found themselves five points up at the water break, after an Emma Hunter goal which was sandwiched in between two Bundoran points. The second quarter saw the sides exchange a couple of points early on, Iseult Ní Mhathúna on target for the Gaels, but as we moved on towards half time, the home side began to dominate proceedings. The Gaels weren’t helped by an injury to Emma Mc Grenaghan, but Emma bravely battled on and went between the posts for the remainder of the game. The Gaeil Fhánada defence were working hard, with the half back line of Ella Mc Bride, Jessica Coll and Caoimhe Friel covering a lot of ground to try keep the home side at bay. They did enjoy a purple patch however and managed to score three goals and a point in the final few minutes of the opening half to leave them six points up at the break.

Iseult Ní Mhathúna fired over the bar after the to reduce the arrears but the home side kept the pressure on and dominated the scoreboard once more in the third quarter, notching up two goals and three points, with Iseult finding her range on two further occasions for the Gaels. The girls continued to battle, and showed their character as the game moved towards its conclusion. Rachael Friel began to get her hands on a lot of ball, and started dictating things in the half forward line. A goal and four points without reply after the water break saw them claw their way back into contention. Jessica Coll finished a great team move to the back of the net, while fine individual points from Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Kelley Carr and two Emma Hunter scores, a free and one from play gave Gaeil Fhánada a glimmer. The home side, not to be outdone responded with a couple of scores of their own to ensure it wasn’t to be a successful comeback,  but in typical Gaels form, they didn’t lie down and a Jessica Coll point and a fine individual goal from Iseult Ní Mhathúna at the end saw them finish the game on a high.

Although the girls didn’t get the result, they put in a huge performance away from home and the management were delighted with their efforts throughout. Rachael Friel had a a huge second half, Olivia Friel was immense at the back, while Ella Mc Bride worked tirelessly from her wing back berth.

We had a wide range of scorers which included Jessica, Iseult, Caitlin, Bláthnaid, Kelley and Emma Hunter, while Emma Mc Grenaghan bravely battled on despite her injury. A special mention to our u14 contingent of Bláthnaid Mc Ateer, Orlaith Mc Grenaghan, Caoimhe Friel and Ava Mc Elwaine who performed really well, and well done particularly to Caoimhe and Ava on their first u16 game.

Rachael Friel, Orlaith Mc Grenaghan, Olivia Friel, Ella Mc Bride, Jessica Coll (1:01), Caoimhe Friel, Iseult Ní Mhathúna (1:04), Emma Mc Grenaghan, Kelley Carr (0:01), Caitlin Heraghty (1:01), Bláthnaid Mc Ateer (1:00), Emma Hunter (1:02), Ava Mc Elwaine.

U15’s prevail in playoff game

Well done to our u15 side who secured victory against St. Mary’s Convoy in Portsalon yesterday evening to book their place in the County Quarter Final.

It was a hard fought game, played in tough conditions but the lads came out on top with a score line of Gaeil Fhánada 2:13 Naomh Mhuire Conmhaigh 1:12.

Maith sibh!

U13’s

The final game of the league for the u13 boys was a humdinger against Glenswilly in Páirc Uí Shiadhail on Wednesday last. Fanad competed well throughout and even though they lost the game by a point, they had goal chances right up until the end which almost grabbed the win from the Glen men.

That game signalled the end of a very good league run for the boys this year, however since they finished in 4th place, they have a playoff against 3rd placed Glenswilly this coming Wednesday to see who will join St Eunan’s and Downings in the all county championship. The game will be played at 7 in Glenswilly.

The much anticipated parish league begins this Friday which promises to be an exciting few weeks for all players. Starts 6.30pm sharp(ish)

Team v Glenswilly: Shane Orsi, Conor Callaghan, Mark Mc Adoo, Charlie Doherty, Cormac Dunleavy, Tiernan Kerr, Evan Mc Daid, Oisin Lynch, Jack Dunleavy, Eoghan Mc Laughlin, Iosaf Mc Ateer, Christian Gibbons, Dan Martin, Conor Friel, Kieran Carr, Dáragh Boyce, Ronan Wilson, Michael Peoples.
