Ulster and Connacht end provincial campaigns
July 12, 2011
The curtain will come down on the 2011 GAA Football Provincial Championships next Sunday when Connacht and Ulster stage their big days at Dr. Hyde Park, Roscommon and Clones respectively.
Roscommon, the defending Connacht champions, play Mayo in Dr. Hyde Park (2.00pm) while Derry and Donegal clash in Clones (4.00pm). It's the first time since 1998 - when, ironically Derry played Donegal - that the Ulster final doesn't feature Armagh or Tyrone. In fact, they shared the last 12 Ulster titles between them in what was the long period of dominance by two counties since Down and Cavan dominated the 1960s. It's also a busy weekend on the qualifier circuit with four games on the programme (one replay from Round 2, plus three Round 3 games).
ROSCOMMON v MAYO
It's the first Connacht final between the counties since 2004 when Mayo won by ten points while they also had an easy win when the counties last clashed in the championship (Connacht semi-final) in 2009.
Roscommon are bidding to retain the Connacht title for the first time 1990 while Mayo last won the title in 2009. Mayo won the last four championship clashes with Roscommon leaving Fergal O'Donnell's men seeking their first win over Sunday's opposition since 2001.
