Derry's Barry McGoldrick
Barry McGoldrick has been appointed captain of the Derry footballers for the 2011 campaign.

The Coleraine Eoghan Rua clubman was handed the role by new Derry manager John Brennan earlier this week.

The Oak Leaf County are not short of leadership material, with current players Paddy Bradley, Kevin McCloy, Enda Muldoon and Gerard O'Kane all having captained the side at various stages in recent years.

McGoldrick & Co have made a fine start to life under Brennan, winning all three group games in the Barrett Sports Lighting Dr McKenna Cup to book a semi-final date with Antrim this weekend.

Quoted in the Irish Daily Star, the new captain said, "It's nice to get it but it won't really change my game. I'll just play my normal game and support all the other players.

"I don't mind that responsibility. It's quite a young team out there but we have a few of the old heads still playing, and playing well."
