Foreglen claim North Derry minor 'double'
September 07, 2006
Foreglen.............1-12
Doire Trasna.......2-06
Foreglen minors were crowned North Derry champions following a thrilling win over Doire Trasna on Wednesday evening 6th September, a first-half goal from Cathal O'Hara proving to be the decisive score of a classic final.
Foreglen, for all their wonderful, incisive football, led by just a single point at the break, 1-08 to 2-04, mainly due to inexperience and naivety that saw them take the wrong option too often in front of goal, trying to work a goal when points were simple, though John Joe McGilligan did pull off one fine save from James Bradley and was unlucky on O'Hara's goal.
When Trasna did get forward, primarily on the counter, they were met with great resilience from Mullan, Bradley and Duffy in the last line, though their sometimes short game was puzzling with the big man planted inside, often isolated against Bradley, over whom he had a considerable height advantage.
They did, however, have one of the game's many bright sparks in Darren Hanley, the wing-half-forward with an ace up his sleeve every time he received possession, and he bamboozled the Foreglen defence with left foot and right, but his two goals and three points were just not enough in the end.
The final nail was drilled firmly into the city side's coffin when full-back Ciaran Donaghy received his marching orders for a second booking five minutes from time.
Foreglen led at that stage by a single point, 1-10 to 2-06, but that finally killed off the Waterside lads' challenge with Nigel Bradley rubbing salt in the wounds by pointing the resulting free, before Shane Duffy burst forward after a sustained spell of possession to fire over an inspirational point that put a goal between them, a gap that Trasna found just too far to bridge.
