Double delight for Glen father-and-son

Derry's Oran McGill with Antrim's Ruairí Brolly.

Last Sunday was a day to remember for father-and-son Gary and Oran McGill who enjoyed a big racing win at Navan before finding a TV to watch their beloved Glen overcome Errigal Ciarán in the Ulster club SFC quarter-final.

Gary, who scored two points in Derry’s 1998 Ulster SFC final victory over Donegal, and Oran, who lined out at corner back for the Oak Leafers in their 2017 All-Ireland MFC final loss to David Clifford’s Kerry, teamed up to steer 22-1 shot Dollys Destination to her second win in three years in the Hotel Park St. Johann Tirol Handicap Hurdle.

Gary has become a successful race trainer since hanging up his boots, while his sons Oran and Dara are both jockeys.

"She was very good now, she likes to come off the pace and, once she starts picking off horses, she keeps at it for you,” Oran said of the nine-year-old, who his father bought for just €300 a few years ago.

"She was probably as good as ever today. She came off a bit of a break with a bit of a leg injury - she's still improving yet, I'd say.”
