Buckley Leech and Maguire I'd imagine they'd be on extended panels at this stage of the year

If Kevin O'Brien told hurlers they couldn't train with their football clubs, he'd get serious abuse for it. It's becoming a joke. What's going on with Gonoud and McHugh? Clubs need space to breathe."
Back training in early October, is it any wonder the footballers were crippled by injuries by the end of the season

The man was dealt a bad hand of cards the minute he took the job, I said here on this forum last year that the management at the time was going to set back hurling in the county thirty years and it's coming to fruition now.
Imagine to think three years ago Wexford were beaten in the Liam McCarthy and ever since that game the team/county had nosedived off a cliff to an extent it has is unbelievable.
Will the best minors now choose football over what is being witnessed, another lost generation of talent is going to happen if something not done. The talent is there with everyone on board to win a joe McDonagh and comfortably stay in Liam McCarthy.

Yeah no surprise when McHugh comes from the Mcguiness school of thought

The past is the past we have to move on and the board have to get this right. I see there is a meeting of hurling clubs monday night and it is very important we have total unity. The hurling clubs and 1 or 2 senior players have to have an input into the selection of new manager and county officials who have no history of involvement with hurling none.

The players need a very hard luck at themselves. Unbelievable unfit over the last few years. Always someone else fault etc etc… They have full use of a local leisure centre and they're constantly in the sauna there! You'd never see one of the footballers in the place; unless in the gym in the same facility. All you have to do is look at how fit the footballers were last year. That wasn't by accident…

What talent is there to win a Joe McDonagh? Name a team plus five subs capable of doing that.

Players selecting managers? Seriously? Would any half serious hurling county have players selecting a manager? That's one reason our hurling is in a mess for the last few years. Players play.

What prospective manager/coach will take the job if that's the approach. The first thing anyone considering the manager/coach position will ring O Brien and ask his opinion on what's what if from outside the county and anyone inside would be very foolish going for the job under those circumstances. A poisoned chalice by the sounds of it if other posters comments here regarding the players are any way near the mark.
It needs a hurling director approach with full buy in from every hurling man woman and child in Westmeath to fix the mess that is now.
Otherwise it'll be the same again in 5 yrs time.
Sure the center of excellence would be nice but didnt Westmeath hurling prosper and thrive without one for years.

You can have the best manager and as many coaches and 20 in a backroom team but if you haven't got the talent there is nothing you can do plus players getting far too much power at county and club level they seem to dictate what goes on look at this year's 3 senior finals in westmeath would you realistically pick out 6 or 7 top top inter County hurlers out of the 6 teams.only thing co board can do now for a start is appoint a county manager who the players will look up too and respect and has had success in previous jobs this has to be a given for a county manager as clubs now won't appoint a manager unless he has a proven track record let alone a county manager.

I'll accept my initial post was very emotive and yes county board on reflection need to also be included in the ownership of this. But this is 4 managers is 4 years I'm not naming individual players but the group as a whole. Every manager can't be terrible and can't be setting poor standards surly ?

Anyone that knew anything about Westmeath hurling would have said we would be where we are now , the fact posters here are surprised shows the disconnect

I agree i didnt put it across correctly i should have said recently retired senior players which has been the norm i believe apart from the Bulfin appointment.

I find it crazy that a manager has been ousted (if this is actually true). We all know we are in a period of transition , was KOB not just brought into steady the ship?
Better teams have gone in the past with less glamorous setups but got stuck in.
Would love to know what type of manager they are looking for. As many posts above say , the players aren't there at the moment and we can't always be relying on trying to get players who have retired back , they have put in great years. You just need to look at the standard of the club games to see this.
