I agree with the Meath poster, yes they are amateurs and its a great opportunity to play professional sport, but it still hurts when a County is losing a top talent. And living in Donegal is better than living in some outback snake, spider and croc infested wasteland from Mad Max. I'm not even on about just AFL scouts, like even the North Amercian scouts, like the two lads from Tyrone, who are constantly trying to bring over top players for the summer to the US. Couldn't agree more. Wouldn't live in either oz or the US for a sizeable pension. There might be attractions for the younger generation but I'll take windswept and rainy rural donegal every day of the week.

Big loss, but best of luck to him on the new journey. Back to the drawing board for defensive shape without him. Would have been earmarked to slot in at CHB in coming years I'm sure

Yes I heard this mentioned by Maurice Brosnan. Apparently Mullin took Collingwoods best player out of a game that they felt they needed the same. Happened that the scout in question had gone to Collingwood from Geelong too.

If you play in the AFL you'd be living in a big city most likely. Dont get me started on the NFL. You can make millions there. There's nothing to do in donegal for young people. There's a reason everyone leaves. Irish people love begrudging others. We are narrow minded. eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 487 - 17/10/2026 05:33:07 2697603 Link 0 |

Of course it's attractive for young people. Make money. Better weather. More things to do. It's ok if you are set in your way. Most others aren't. Best of luck to him and all the others who've left the country to make money. eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 487 - 17/10/2026 05:34:25 2697604 Link 0 |

In my experience most people who criticize the idea of moving away for work / career etc are usually people who never left the country in the first place. No one is saying he or other GAA lads are never going to come back. They're simply going to have fun, see other cultures, make money etc. eddieSize5Balls (Donegal) - Posts: 487 - 17/10/2026 05:37:42 2697605 Link 0 |

AFL as a spectacle is rubbish in my opinion. Gaelic football is a superior more skillful game. If it was an amateur game nobody would be heading down there. Now not for one second do I blame any player going and wish them all the best. If you can make money and live a good lifestyle then go for it. It is worrying though that the GAA are losing potential huge future stars. Obviously ye have just lost Finbarr. Kobe will be a massive loss for us as is Mullin. People often forget about Pearce Hanley would I believe would have made the difference in many one point all Ireland final defeats in the past. So yeah best of luck to all the lads gone and heading down but as a GAA fan it's soul destroying. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 12296 - 17/10/2026 07:14:17 2697606 Link 1 |

I think i am a bit set in my ways alright. Did plenty travelling when I was younger, lived in a few big cities. Wouldn't begrudge anyone moving away for career or money or adventure etc but I am simply countering the narrative that living anywhere but donegal or rural Ireland is somehow better. I find certain other countries somewhat vacuous and superficial and lacking in the level of culture and history we are blessed with here. Not all of us need sunshine 365 days a year either, I'd find that fairly boring really. And as I already said, I wish Finbarr the very best.
