I was in Roscommon on business and caught the last 20 mins of the St Brigids game. Suffice to say they steamrolled the opposition and will win another county final comfortably. A fine performance but a poor standard of football throughout the game which I was surprised about. Thought the standard would be higher. ohwow (Leitrim) - Posts: 331 - 05/10/2026 14:27:05 2696287 Link 1 |

I said competitive than to win. Brigid's should they overcome Pearses and they needed two tries and MOTM performance from Conor Carroll to do so last year have the toughest route in Connacht needing to beat the Sligo champions at home and away trips Tuam and Castlebar in order to win it, the type of route than can get even the best of teams beat. Yes Faithleachs,Strokestown and Glaveys before them was stronger Intermediate champions than the current Finalists sides who have gone on to reach senior semi-finals and Tulsk or Éire Og are unlikely going to do that at senior level next year however I would see them as strong as Castlerea in 2023 Croans 2014 when they won the Connnacht Intermediate title and Dominic's,Fuerty,Elphin who was competitive in finals. intermediate is always at a steady standard with the amount of decent Galway,Mayo clubs about. No disrespect to B teams but it's good for the 2nd year in a row that two 1st choice teams have reached the Junior final. I was attendance for Aidans v Ballinameen group stage game and it was one of the highest quality Junior matches I've seen in this county for many years so hopefully more of the same for that final. Thanks very much. We obviously need to improve massively in Roscommon to try and reach Leitrim's level.

This is why club success outside of the county is not really an indicator of intercounty success. Would you rather be Roscommon with Bridgids being one of the best club teams in the country with only really Pearses and Boyle being overly competitive outside of that, or Kerry where the championship is competitive enough that the All Ireland champions are out in Round 1, or Mayo where neither of the two finalists made it out of the groups last year and who have 23 Mayo clubs represented on their intercounty panel (24 in all). Club success is brilliant and for anyone from a club that goes deep its better than an intercounty run but club success often isn't indicative of intercounty joy. otgarom (Mayo) - Posts: 24 - 05/10/2026 18:57:05 2696329 Link 3 |

Big time. We are lagging so far behind them. It's embarrassing. (The obsession is real)

Standard high enough to get to and nearly win the All Ireland final last January.

Yeah, Galway really need to get their act together.

It certainly isn't, but a competitive championship and even representation also isn't indicative of success at intercounty. Mayo clubs haven't made a dent in Connacht in a decade. That's not necessarily a good thing either. Meath have had many different winners over the last 15 years, but their clubs have been poor for a long time in Leinster. Over the same period their county team also hasn't won a provincial title. One very strong club winning isn't ideal either, as we had with Corofin for a good while. Although you could argue that Crossmaglen's success from the late 90s onward backboned the breakthrough for Armagh. Ideally, we'd all like to have a strong championship with a decent number of contenders. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 3093 - 06/10/2026 12:14:27 2696388 Link 0 |

Saw somewhere 13 football champions dethroned so far this year.

Without the strength of Roscommon club football in senior and intermediate they probably wouldn't be as often in Division 1 or Division 2 champions the last decade, instead would be closer to Leitrims level in Division 4. A stats from journalist Colm Keys. Out of the 28 football clubs in Roscommon, a total of 25 clubs are represented across the county's three major Connacht-winning squads (Minor, U-20, and Senior). indicative of intercounty joy there even though the Seniors have underachived in the All-Ireland series.
