McLaughlin went up to Cill Chartha for the Comórtas Peile on the weekend. He played in their quarter-final loss to Gaoth Dobhair. He missed a huge amount of football from his latter years underage into his early senior years. He's seems to be getting an injury free run for a while now, so hopefully that continues. He needs plenty more games to continue to develop. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2845 - 01/06/2026 20:36:51 2677124 Link 0 |

I'd fear with what HQ have done with the provincial championships such scenes could becoming to an end. Managers was still feeling their way through it this year and now they know what they know will probably act accordingly from next year especially if no extra perks is given to the provincial champion. So Youth V Experience in Salthill. Remember the last time we had a visit from Westmeath. giveitlong (Galway) - Posts: 1321 - 02/06/2026 08:55:40 2677167 Link 0 |

The luck has been with Galway in draws this year. Just needed to beat Leitrim to get a home All-Ireland series round 1 game and to reach the All-Ireland Quarter-finals Kildare and Westmeath to beat in Salthill. No disrespect to Kildare and Westmeath but Joyce and co wouldn't have hand picked better draws. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 874 - 02/06/2026 09:26:08 2677185 Link 0 |

Westmeath, have been putting up some huge scores and are well coached which makes them very dangerous but with home advantage and a near full team available should be getting over the line and into a quarter final. Jonnytest (Galway) - Posts: 27 - 02/06/2026 09:53:57 2677196 Link 0 |

He had a superb game over the weekend, got most of the midfield ball and scored a few 2 pointers. Can't understand why James McLoughlin and Ger Davoren aren't on the panel now. They were on it when they weren't half as good.

Good draw. The big question now is will the blond lad take out Fitzy, before he gets off with the liverpool lass. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 4763 - 02/06/2026 10:24:56 2677213 Link 1 |

We were unlucky that day that we didn't goal from throw in, with a better shot that game was over in 30 seconds. Also missing Kelly & Finnerty that day, fairly sure McDaid didn't play full game either. Hard to look at that 2024 game without the 2023 game also as we schooled them in 2023 and they had much more work done on us in 2024. Also one of the more defensive teams under the old rules, and we obviously prefer the new rules. systematic (Galway) - Posts: 300 - 02/06/2026 11:02:17 2677229 Link 0 |

While happy with the draw, one only has to think back to the Meath match last year and we all know how that ended.Happy though to be avoiding Armagh and Donegal at this stage at least. Cornetto2 (Galway) - Posts: 179 - 02/06/2026 11:45:14 2677257 Link 0 |

Meath did promote to div1 this season, while Westmeath just failed to exit div3. Let's not be bluffing or waffling here, we got the softest draw available by a country mile. If we can't bate a team on our home patch that recently went to extra time v Kildare and Cavan, we won't deserve our qfinal spot. It's interesting that Galway got the softest draws imaginable this season, after drawing a serious 'group of death' a year ago.

Tyrone v Galway Minor Quarter final set for Saturday 2pm in Ashbourne Meath. Roscommon not happy to be playing Ulster opposition in a Ulster venue and rightly so so at least Galway avoided that. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 874 - 02/06/2026 12:20:52 2677278 Link 0 |

I'd look at that with a pinch of salt since nearly all of those games went to extra time

That's a crazy choice of venue and I'd imagine the crowd will be tiny. They could have had it in Cavan with the other game or Carrick, Longford, Sligo

Regardless of divisions 1 or 3, Westmeath put a good beating on Meath in this year's championship, which is more relevant. I'd have them as a better team than Meath at the moment, but much of a muchness. One thing they do have is pace and lots of it. They have direct runners from deep, which is something we haven't coped well with. Kildare did very little of this, so we weren't tested. I'd prefer us kicking the ball wide than getting turned over, as we could be hit badly on the counter. Need to put a squeeze on their kickout as much as possible.
