Ireland prepare for massive November test against South Africa......

Seriously? Rugby is a tiny minority sport, why so much coverage?"
Will you be at the First Walsh Cup Test in January old bean?

It along witb other games determine seedings for the World Cup. So not a friendly.

Maybe ye should all stay at home so. The rest of us will get on the best without ye.

Replying To GreenandRed:  "There's people working full time selling alcohol in Croke Park? They could offer better catering facilities in the beer kiosks and leave the alcohol for the premium level. They got rid of Guinness as sponsors of the Hurling championship because they thought it might promote drinking for young people. Another bad move for me. They could have kept Guinness and told them they'd have to run a responsible drinking campaign. Croke Park ran fine without alcohol sales and so did some local pubs. I think it's sad to see some people drinking there, queuing for pints, some of them queuing with their children and having little interest in the games."
Yes there's full time staff working hospitality in croker year round. There's meetings events and functions in croker daily. Across premium and hospitality areas with waiters, bar staff, chefs working every day there. Same in aviva.
You sound a right fun individual.
Why leave alcohol to premium only? That doesnt make sense. And better catering facilities how exactly

When you say "local GAA people" who are you referring to?
Why is it a ridiculous comment about loss of jobs. There's thousands of staff working match days in the stadium. Many in the bars. Close the bars and they lose their jobs. Why is kids losing their jobs a good thing.
Weird to go all stereotyping and classiest on this

Rugbt isn't a tiny minority sport though. What else is on right now that should be getting more coverage than rugby?

Why did you go? Plenty of toing and froing of GAA spectators to seats during games in Croke Park to the toilets, getting food, beer etc. Not unique to rugby matches. In hindsight €160 wasn't a bad price for a vantage point that let you to watch the match and observe the activities of about 25,000 people.

Of course he will, so will I Barney ;-) although Walsh Cup doesn't have any bearing on seedings for Championship!

How many people play it nationally? The media would have you believe everyone. How many of the national team went to the same school?

The reality is it's smaller than hurling and microscopic compared to football or soccer.

That's not even considering golf, boxing, equestrian or even athletics.

My point was world cup qualifiers are a big story and it was a footnote before a rugby friendly.

10 or 15 years ago a gushing RTÈ reporter was interviewing the IRFU CEO (Philip Browne?) .
Asked him was he delighted with the growth of Rugby.
His response was "we are a minority sport with around 250 clubs in total"

The difference between soccer and rugby is that when the international soccer team are going well or in a major tournament it lifts the whole country, the dogs on the streets are talking about it. The rugby certainly doesnt have that effect.

It is a minority sport. I live in West Dublin. One GAA club, one Rugby club, and about 10 football clubs. Guess which one is always on the radio though. It is not the GAA club.

It's a minority sport when compared to soccer or gaelic games. But it's not a tiny minority sport in the way that other sports like canoeing and table tennis are. And all the other poster said was that it's not a tiny minority sport.

It's actually one of our major sports in terms of things like partipation/membership, revenue, and TV viewing figures.

Crikey, is it the soccer clubs?

Rugby maybe a 'minority' sport when it comes to participation at a grassroots level, but it certainly isn't when it comes to support. The provinces are very well supported, as is the national team. I support all sports and it's a pity others wouldn't take the same attidute.
