Replying To togoutlads:  "Yes agreed on your point re marketing of our games in Galway. It's poor and quite amateurish. A problem in marketing Galway's county teams and thus building up the crowds and a larger fan base is this - we're not winning! We don't do momentum or consistency. We don't build up 'Big Mo' - large scale momentum, a phenomenon that's been talked about in US sports marketing since the 1960s, where winning brings crowds, crowds brings money to feed further development, ongoing development brings longer term success. Big Mo doesn't just apply to professional sport, it applies to amateur sport too.
I'll focus on football for a min. We never build solid momentum year on year, like the Dubs, Kerry, Mayo. Under Joyce's tenure you've all seen what we're capable of when it's all coming together but what is allowed to happen is that we're peaking and troughing and in any code that loses the people. The troughs endure far longer than the peaks and nobody here really wants to go out of their way to watch their beloved maroon and white lose. Parents won't bring the young kids and the massive numbers of more peripheral supporters (as opposed to the small number of regularly attending diehards) just won't venture out to see us beaten and play incoherent, back-peddling football. The regular punter, the thousands of families and kids involved in our games in the county, want to see us having a cut, taking down the noisy neighbours, beating a Dublin or a Kerry, but it just doesn't happen. It's damaging our prospects and it's hard to see how it's going to change any time soon."
Very true - Galway GAA teams don't do long term momentum or consistency too well. The last football team to do that was the 60's 3 in a row team (one could also argue the late 90's / early 00's team had a decent level of consistency) and the last hurling team to do it was the late 80's team where there was no provincial championship to play.

Replying To Marooned:  "U20 result

Mayo 0-16 Galway 2-6

Galway actually got 2 goals in the first 15 minutes but 6 points is a paltry return overall. Only 2 points scored in the 2nd half. 2 early points after half time but then didn't score at all for the last 30 minutes of the game.

Feels like we are slipping at bit at underage again after a good last decade. No Connacht title since 2018 at minor. Even though they won the AI through the back door in 22. No Connacht U20 title since 2020."
how many counties have won both the minor and under 20 football All-Irelands in the past 4 or 5 years?
Would Galway be the only one?

Since grade changed in 2018, only Cork and Galway

Strange how low a transition rate from minor to u20/21.
Hurling is even worse.
Galways last u21 success in 2011.
Minor success in 2009 translated to u21 in 2011 but not in 2012 when you would expect,
Since 2009, 6 more minor All Irelands without any u21/u20

Replying To LottoPlus:  "I actually went to the match. Galway could have had a third goal in the first half only for a good save by the goalie. When Thompson and then Kilcommons went off injured we lost our way and midfield. For those two in particular it is the work they do off the ball (running lines, plugging holes, unseen work) that was missing. Thought some of the lads brought the ball into tackles and were easily turned over. Some were very greedy on the ball, that comes from playing poor opposition last week and thinking you could get away with it again. I think they will learn but they better pray Kilcommons and Thompsons injuries are not that bad."
Yeah, Thompson was a huge loss when he went off. He was pulling most of the strings in attack when Galway were on top for the first 25 minutes and they looked a bit lost after he went off. Savo said he had a dead leg so hopefully he'll be ok for Sligo next week in what is probably a must win game now.

Replying To crankyincorofin:  "I didn't promote Conor Flaherty anywhere in my post. I haven't commented on him at all. I will say that I say him play poorly for his club as an outfielder last year and I didn't see him play in the Sigerson. He surely needs to be playing games in goal to be our best option. Oran Burke doesn't get a game for our club. So same issue.

I will say that I think both of them, and a few other goalkeepers in the county, would be better than what we have consistently seen from our current goalkeeper. I don't think he should be running up to catch his own kickout but I think he should be able to kick it to his own players, and he is not. All he does is whack it and we can all see it.

The guy is 31 - not some outstanding young prospect learning the ropes and "developing"."
Flaherty Sigerson keeper of the year. Should surely raise his stock a little.

Unfortunately he still be sub goalie until this management team time is up ,, they can't see what majority of people can see is obvious there lies the problem,,

Whenever about anything else they should have given him a game or two in the league.

I watched back the 2001 All Ireland last night. Christ Joyce could kick it from all angles and they went over. Jah Fallon pointing from the sideline and far out on either side and ah lads Michael Donnellan, maybe the greatest player that ever played for Galway. Its way past time to win it again.

Great to see the return of the leagues on a domestic level. Early days yet but nice to gave some club activity.

What's the format for promotion and relegation?

Same stuff in Galway 1 up 1 down in leagues what's the point? Should be like Allianz 2 up and they play a final. Wise up

The happiest I've ever been watching a game.

Ja kicked a couple of great scores that day but I think the kick you're referring to was in the 98 final.

Yes I think there has been some mixing up of the best parts (from a Galway viewpoint) of the second halves of the 98 and 01 finals!

Forwards always get the praise but Tomás Mannion was unbelievable, especially in 98. Every ball kildare booted towards his marker that day came right back at them.

The Galway team of today are a long way behind those 98 / 01 Galway teams I'm sorry to say!

There also a long way off what was showcased today in croker in either finals. The sheer speed and directness of transition.

Yeah Galway are way off the level seen in Croke Park today. The directness is the striking difference. The speed of attack. Galway are way off it. Capable of troubling anyone on a one off, but the All Ireland is for another year alas.

Would have to agree - Galway have become so laborious with their build-up play and have so many sloppy turnovers its becoming a joke. The players can't seem to take a tackle without losing it or else they give a stupid "pass" that was never on. There is also no kick-out strategy and the kick-out is so slow one would nearly have to time for a cup of tea watching it - when it is eventually kicked out it appears that only the opposition is able to catch it or gather the breaking ball. If PJ and Cian O'Neill want to see football the way it should be played the Derry / Dublin league final from yesterday is a good example.

If Galway played the way Dublin did yesterday sliced open down the middle time and time again a petition would be set up on Hoganstand for John Daly to do the honourable thing and retire.

Or

Galway missed the chances Derry did our forwards would be slated as one trick ponies playing as individuals with no game plan.

Easy watch a game and pick out all the positives as we've no skin in the game. When your own team is playing it is only then you pay attention to all the mistakes. And yesterday wasn't shy on mistakes.
