World Cup Final Clashes With Club Semi Finals

Replying To BarneyGrant:  "Few I would think.

TV stations do not close down all their other channels when something more popular is on somewhere else!

Hundreds of thousands of people are watching other things or doing better things like reading or playing music or walking their dogs or sleeping while the World Cup is on.

As someone said above, a lot of the criticism of GAA for this is from people who hate GAA, let's be honest about it. I have minimal interest in catering any more to these people than we already have done."
A bit unfair to generalise about criticism of the gaa, I criticize them but I certainly do not hate them or anything near hate.

As ive mentioned before, if Ballyhale/gunner was 130 there would be little to no complaining and both could be watched at home

Just to add why are people who would be interested in the hurling and soccer being punished when its so needless.

You prefer soccer to hurling. Knock yourself out as they say :-)"

Maybe record one and watch it straight after? It would still be live once you don't tell your mates who might tell you the score for badness!!! Only really an issue for someone who was planning actually to attend both. Which would be a minute group of people let's face it!

Constructive criticism can be helpful to anyone.

I'm talking about the media and social media drivers of this. Not you!

It's nearly Christmas. Limited possibilities of rearranging anything. I can see the argument for the 1.30 start but maybe that doesn't suit travel or even the already agreed TV coverage? TG4 won't be showing the soccer regardless even if the games are called off.

It would be deeply ironic too if after telescoping the inter county championships to leave more time for clubs if we were to postpone games to suit people watching soccer on other side of the world.

I heard (can't validate) that Gianni Infantino and Larry McCarthy/Tom Ryan have a conference call later, with the outcome expected to be that the World Cup final will be played in Croke Park AFTER Ballygunner Ballyhale.
Failing that, throw in time for the football will be pushed back to 7pm GMT .

I just think its so silly and needless, on the Saturday the only soccer on is 3rd/4th place play off which is 1 of the biggest waste's of time in any sport, only free to air rugby over the weekend is Leinster/Gloucester on RTE on the Friday night, I know Dunloy/ St Thomas can't be on the Saturday but if the other semi final was it would have a very high tv audience and maybe even a few extra neutrals to the attendance , only people who might ignore it is avid Darts fans!

Why is this even an issue and why would GAA haters even care? Maybe I'm not from a part of the country where that friction happens. The World Cup like the Olympics is a massive global sporting event that comes around only once every four years. The GAA shouldn't be criticised for scheduling the games for that day, they have a calendar to maintain. The supporters from the clubs will naturally pick those game over the World Cup. But likewise why do we have to downplay the significance of the World Cup final just because it is soccer? Do the viewing figures include the Player or firesticks? Nearly everyone I know who watches sports on TV has a firestick now. World Cups have produced some of the most iconic sporting moments in history so if you want to watch the WC more power to you and likewise the club games.

Something strange must be going on in the world, because this makes two current threads where you and I find ourselves in broad agreement......! :)

Replying To patmouse:  "This is the biggest sport in the world played all over the world . There will be 95% of the TV's on that day with the world cup, 4 % watching something else and maybe .5% / 1% watching the hurling and anyone who thinks otherwise has their head buried.

The WC has been brilliant, its been fun, exciting, everyone loves watching Brazil and the likes with there dancing, The Hurling match will be payed in almost empty stadium, in the mid of winter and the player and managers all on media bans, the whole fun has been removed."
If 10 % of the people in Ireland watch the world cup final you'd be lucky. As for the hurling matches, that'll be the only game that matters for them club supporters. Watching Brazil dancing, great viewing.

On the wedding of the St Thomas player that's actually been moved now til the Thursday after the game, the bride is a camogie player herself so obviously more understanding than others of the circumstances.

Jus a comment, in the past 20 years our culture and our tradition has changed massively, we are at an eery cross roads, our freedom of speech continues to be filtered and cherry picked, what we watch on tv is hand picked for us we have no say in it, the idea is to satisfy the sponsors and the majority of viewers not the minority.
Sport and the way it is brought to us on tv has gone askew, on all channels, so we take it or leave it, its not going to make or break the gaa, the traditionalists will keep it going. If I miss out on the hurling it wont be because I'll be watching soccer on tv.

Is it just me or is this the first time a game at this level has been fixed to suit a wedding? How many times have players got helicoptors and the likes to play hurling and football the same day? I've never heard so much about a wedding!
