Meath Trials

Just curious to know what players have been called to the trial games eamon o brein is playing during the training ban. I think john donahouge from moynalvey is goin all well. I think stephen mkenna, alan nestor and rory maguire are back in the fold. I would love to see trevor giles back to lead some of the youngsters on and put good ball into the full forward line. Not sure he has the legs or appitite for it anymore though.

Where though? Centre-back?

I'd like to see him tried out there, McGuinness has been fantastic this year but we should be looking at grooming a long-term replacement for Moyles, i.e. a big, athletic ball-winner with good distribution, ideally someone who's versatile aswell. I'd like to see either John Donoghue, Eoin Reilly or Brian Ennis staking a place for this role in the run-up to the championship.

As much as I've always admire John, I feel his chance came and went. He got a run under Barry from what I remember and he looked quite sluggish though probably out of position at wing back.

Trevor Giles has one more year in him and i wouldnt be suprised to see him back wearing the gren and gold in 2010 with number 11 on his back! i heard packie doyle is straight on to the prelimery panal for the o byrne cup anyway, he had a great year this year and will prob be pushing for a starting position come championship. good to see eamomn o brien is bringing in the right type of players

Have to agree that giles has at least one all ireland left in him! still in my opinion the best centre forward in the game. As for Packie Doyle, i cant understand why he hasnt been in the meath team before. one of the most consistent club footballers around. I also feel that my own club should have three or four others on the panel as well as meade!

come off it rathkenny star there is no way rathkenny have four or five players near fit for the meath pannel if they did they wouldnt be worrying about relegation playoffs

It'd be great to see Trevor back on the Meath team but I don't think it's going to happen lads. He's involved in the management of the u21 team, and would he really have the hunger for another year? And would it not be more helpful for the team in the long run to be blooding in a new young player?

late and high im afraid i have to disagree, on paper rathkenny clearly have one of the best teams in the county. The two donegans are well able for county football and also the two curtis's have been rolling back the years lately! Meath team could do with their experience next year.

not the john donoghue thing again. a great player, just happens to be a half back, of which we have a dozen. plus manager after manager cant be wrong. plus dont know wat panel packie doyle is on but its not a meath one. no training or panels made or allowed train in november. i watched the trial matches last friday night and there's not alot of hope for improving the existing panel. very good players, just not great ones. a thing i noticed is that senior footbal is not the only place to look. the best players to a man on friday night were inter and junior players. just a thought or two.

Have to agree with the last post, imagine those five in the forward line along with big joe. It would have everything, pace, power and loads of talent.

its obvious rathkennystar is having a laugh, nobody from rathkenny deserves a shot except maybe james macken and he's been called to the trial matches, the rest forget about it

Out of curiosity which Junior players played well in the matches. What clubs are they from do you know?

Cant imagine many Junior players makin it. Followed the junior championship last year and apart from Mickey Burke no one stood out. Youd want to be playin inter at least. John Mcdermott and Antony Moyles transfered to senior clubs and both went on to represent Ireland. Also a good point is that teams from north meath are not competing at underage or adult level at the top flight. These clubs need to get there act together or our county teams will suffer. lack of numbers is not an excuse.

theres a really good young lad fron ballinabrackey, very accurate. the south meath team seemed to be made up of no senior teams bar dunboyne and they should have beaten the entral team which are all senior teams. must admit names and clubs i dont knw off hand. did see two good players, wearing na fianne togs and dunsany togs. dont know names. dunsany player might be this steven clynch i hear alot about. to other poster, i agree that theres not anything in inter or junior to strengten team but that goes for senior too. and remember micky burke was meaths best player against kerry

excellant point sammaguire99, something needs to be done about these mostly north meath junior clubs who are struggling to compete with the rest of the teams in the county, its not fair on any half decent young footballers coming through the age groups at these clubs, having to go out and get heavily beaten in games, losing interest and end up giving up football at a very early age while if they were at properly run stronger club they could maybe go on to represent their county or at least get the chance to. im sure the county has already missed out on some players because of this so something needs to be done and quick before we miss out on any more!!
