Pairc Tailteann and County Grounds

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Our best years for finances tend to come from county final replays, so i reckon the answer is to have some seriously horrificaly bad refereeing to engineer draws in the senior hurling and football finals. Some cynics may see through it and not attend, but the money will still be made.

On a serious note though, that Tyone idea is great in theory, but i know a lot of people who wouldnt trust the county board to do the right things with any money, never mind forking over 6-7000 euro to them. They havent a great track record for organising things (The prefabs having no planning permission, having to be reminded to finish competitions in November, only noting 100k extra debt now etc.).

And for those saying all is well because Navan has a good pitch, that may be true but on any given matchday about 50 people are going to use it, and they would be on the pitch no matter what state it's in. The thousands of spectators are the main concern, and they dont go to games to appreciate a good sod. Fans require better more modern facilities if we want to attract big games.

CastleBravo -Its not facilities that attract a crowd at a football match-its the teams playing and standards of football that attract crowds along with keeping the price of admission reasonable.

On the issue of development I am inclined to agree with you CastleBravo. I wouyld say though that the running of the association within the county should always be separate from capital development which is a separate issue. We are obviously spending money foolishly (money we do not have) and we should be cutting down on expenses of our various teams. I would say that there is more money being spent on the various teams (spin doctors, conditioning experts etc) than was in the 80's and 90's and it appears that standards are not improving.

Was talking more about improving P.T. so that Navan might be chosen as a neutral venue for big qualifiers, U21 games, league finals etc. A good Meath team will only really attract fans to Navan for league games as most championship games arent at home, and Meaths league games will be played in Navan until P.T. collapses into a pile of rubble.

brown cows, im not talking about the car park or where the Aras is situated ,more at the back of the mound between the ambulance Hq and toward the mortuary ,there is quite a lot of "road frontage " there that could be developed .its dead space as is.

Checked online there. Meath co board have planning permission only last July for concrete terracing behind the goals. New toilets along the terraces. Along with an all inclusive stand the stretches from the curved concrete terrace down the whole touch line.

The county board hardly would have taken the effort if they dont plan to develop from here

Ye it was granted. You can access the file quite easily. Go on to the Meath co co website and search Pairc Tailteann and you.ll find the application.
They would not have applied for permission nd got plans drawn up if theres no desire to develop soon

Agree with you 100% MR. County grounds crumbling all around the country and they are spending 9m on a training centre? Who is that aimed at? The counties are still going to do 95% of their training on their own pitches. Many counties have spent a lot of money building their own training facilities (or half-building in our case).
Would that money not be better spent in putting even basic facilities in Drogheda, Newbridge, Aughrim, Navan, or any of the other pitches around the country that are urgently in need of investment. What about putting some money into making sure that the spectators who generate the money actually have a small degree of comfort going to a game.

As i posted on the louth page re. County grounds.. 4.5 mil would have upgraded our stand and allowed drogheda put in terracing and a small stand

gaa incompetence yet again

I noted with interest yesterday that the grass banks were allowed to be used in Drogheda at the Wexford v Louth match, makes me wonder what the Health & Safety people saw in the grass banks in Drogheda that they didn't in Navan, they were very quick and insistent that ours shut down

Very good point and was wondering the same myself.

The seem mad to reduce the cpapcity of Drogheda, Navan & Newbridge around the same time that they are trying to force the issue of this shared stadium around the M50.

Aughrim, Cusack park in Ennis, Dungarvin and a few others arent getting the same rap, even tho the are in similar or poorer state, but they are in a different part of the country and the GAA arent trying to push a new stadium in those areas.

In relation to the use of grass banks, Colm O'Rourke alluded to the H+S people allowing a concert in Slane alcohol etc. on sale, and yet they have a problem with a grass bank at PT and other places around the country. While the stand and other facilities in PT are a disgrace, I've been on the grass at the hospital end (many times) of PT when it's packed with no problems. Don't believe GAA people have changed so much in recent times to make it more of a health hazard than the "grass bank" at Slane.

Good Point Moylough. It is natural for people to enjoy leisure time involving walking/standing on grass. No problem doing so at Golf Events, Cricket games, Point to Points & a wide etc. We should protest this nonsence. Or if it was merited why are crowds not excluded from Public parks in Cities. Our PT is been singled out for some reason.

It was shocking to see people scattered across the banks in drogheda.. Gaa hypocracy again. They are content to say there is a health and safety issue with PT and then let people stand wherever in drogheda.

Lets be honest the game should have been put in Navan. The 10,000 would have been met..

This idea of a joint stadium along the m50 can never be let gather any headway. It will only lead to a monopolisation of gaelic facilities in the capital along with destroying pride of place.
The gaa is built on pride in ones area (and mainly County) shared grounds will eradicate a fundemental part of the game.
