Meath Junior Team 2012

Agree with the comments above.

We should aim to imitate what Kildare have been doing. Their junior set-up train with the seniors, and are say.. all between the age group of 19 to 25.

Instead of picking players that have been around the block it should be for lads ready to make that step up to senior level. A progression.

The Junior team cannot be used as a 2nd or next best squad because due to the size of the county, number of clubs etc players can only be selected if they didn't play SFC for their club or county in the previous calendar year. ie only players from Junior or Intermediate players can play unless they either didn't play at all or only played 2nd team football last year. The County Junior team is more or less the Meath 2nd ½ or 3rd team.

Does anyone know if our recent fall into 3rd world football changes the above in any way?

Wasn't sure where exactly, thought I'd heard Boston but thanks for correcting that. Is it just for the summer he's going huff? Is he injured at the moment aswell?

Structural Changes to the county teams

In both Hurling and football, and this is open for discussion because unlike county board officials i will never claim to know it all!

1.All under-age Meath teams from U12 to U16 should have development squads of Min 50 players to ensure all talent is Nurtured.
Quality training and games should be organised to keep everyone involved from U-12 to U-16.There should be no A & B teams just mix the players around. The county board should pay coaches to train these team ratio 1 coach to 10 players per session or if possible get senior players to visit these sessions(i no senior players are already very busy so only when suits). Competition should be irrelevant as development is all that matters at young ages.If every Player paid €1 per session that would cover the costs of 5 county coaches for the session!!

2.U-17 and U-18 should consist of another panel of 50 players to ensure a continuous flow of players through the grades.Another area where there should be county coaches in the ratio 1 coach to 10 players per session. These players should have access to the Gym in Pairc Tailteann and also to watch and meet County senior players on a weekly basis at training sessions.Games can be organised weekly to ensure competitive action is got and preparation for minor championship is done correctly

3.U21 Team should be allowed to use all players eligible to train and play challenge games for the duration of their competition. What happens in Meath is that any good U-21 footballers are with the senior panel and are just released for the U21 championship game having never trained with the team before or only a handful of times at most. This would allow U21 teams better conditions to compete in the competition and prepare better.(i.e. Bryan Menton trained 3 times with u21s this year and played 2 games, one of them was a championship defeat to Westmeath,And he is the most talented player on the team but not allowed prepare with his team mates properly)

4.The Junior team should managed by a senior selector!!This automatically allows players to be seen and progression is possible. If both senior and junior teams trained once a week in Dunganny throughout the months of February and March and were allowed interact with each other this would allow for greater competitiveness within the panels and also a chance for all junior panel members to develop at the top level and be seen playing at that level!

Finally....
All players both hurling and football should have access to the Gym in Pairc Tailteann
County Board should ensure all under-age teams and adult teams communicate better between each other
The county Board will claim to have no Money for these actions and YES this costs money BUT.................We have a massive population in Meath and great people always willing to help, If the county board got more initiative to go get the funds instead of expecting them to arrive automatically Meath GAA would be in a better place.

Its just my opinion, and probably a waste of words :-)

No doubt a crazy team was picked. Its mad that everyone in the county can pick a strong meath junior team but the manager at the minute cannot.

In fairness, the players asked we all pick on this more than likely will not have he interest in playing junior for meath, big difference. I know three off hand who snubbed the opportunity at the weekend alone, 3 of these would certainly be starting on this team
