Christ no! ... not Michael Collins. He could be worth ten points to Galway. Remember 2001? He refereed that final and gave Galway everything, twice as many frees. Had nightmares of the man since and poor old Ollie Murphy when Collins made sure Donegal beat us in the All-Ireland quarter-finals the following year

Are the GAA gone stark raving mad in appointing Collins to referee a Meath game with Galway. The bitter memories from 2001 are still vivid in my gut. Every Meath person at that match remembers the antics of the Corkman amd a cameo performance arrived the following year when he gave some crazy decisions in favour of Donegal and made sure Ollie Murphy obtained a long suspension.
Was suspicious at the appointment of Maurice Deegan the last day and I have to admit that if you ignore the opening 10 minutes the Laoisman had a good game but Michael Collins is a different proposition altogether.
Yesterday Padraig Hughes was the appointed referee so why the quick change? Who objected? It certainly was not Meath and at this stage they would be crazy to play under Collins.Do the GAA do any homework on venues, times or referees?

What do you suggest. We don't turn up. Whoever the ref is we just have to grin and bear it. There are too many complaints about referees many of them over the top. Deegan did all right despite the criticism.

The Real Ard RI.
How did you feel after 2001? Galway got most of the big decisions and nearly 70 per cent of the frees.Nestor got sent off for nothing and Padraig if memory serves me right got 10 points from free kicks.

Lads it made no real differece in 01 who reffed the game the right team won. We should also remember that we got a pretty dubious penalty in the final in that same game!! He was poor alright the following year, but lets get on with it hopefully we wont need his assistance on Saturday evening.

I don't think Michael Collins will be an issue. After his performances in the early 00's, one of the top GAA journalists did a piece on Collins reffing Meath games in a national newspaper. He looked at 8 games over a 2 year period where Collins reffed us 4 times (seems a lot in a short period) and 4 different refs were involved for the other 4 games. He found that consistently the 4 seperate refs gave Meath roughly the same amount of frees but Collins consistently only gave Meath half the amount of the other 4. Collins I don't think has reffed a Meath game since although I'm open to contradiction but I'd say there was an amount of egg on face for him and the GAA when the statistics were revealed. Alot of people were saying it at the time about Collins but the GAA were as dismissive as ever until the report was done. I may be wrong but I think it was Martin Breheny who done the analysis.

I agree, he wasn't particularly great but that's not what beat us. Nestor was sent of for a second yellow which he richly deserved. If memory serves me correct it was the first yellow which was soft but he should have been careful after that and he wasn't. I was fairly near the penalty incident and didn't think it was a penalty. Incidentally it wasn't the ref who kicked it wide. Ollie got a kick in the hand which broke his finger and this was the changing of the game but in fairness it was on the Refs blind side and he would need to have Xray vision to see that one Whether this kick was deliberate or not is difficult to say but a number of the players told me that they didn't believe it was. Do we want to get a reputation of whining about whatever ref is appointed.

I don't say it often, but Sean got it very wrong in 2001. Derry Savage gave Mark O'Reilly the run around in the first half. Fay barely gave Padraig Joyce a touch of the ball in the same period. Fay was on target for All Ireland and Footballer of the Year until Sean switched him onto Savage. Padraig Joyce ran riot and Declan Meehan had the freedom of the park to run at us giving him man of the match and footballer of the year.

The Meath/Galway all ireland game was 10 years ago time to move on. galway were the better team on the day nuff said. no referee done meath out of that game werent good enuff simple as. people were whinging 2 weeks ago about maurice deegan being referee for the louth game and he had a great game. Meath are playing at home v a galway team that arent so hot at the moment and yet people on this are complaining about the change in referee. if meath are any good they should beat galway. doesnt matter who the referee is. so dont mind who the referee is he has a job to do. the players also have a job to do.

It certainly does matter, particulary in a close run game the referee can have a massive say, just look at the recent Dublin v Kildare game. Kildare were deprived of a replay, not sayin they deserved it but they were deprived of it nevertheless. Referees are crucial, they can have favourites without a doubt, I mean look at Pat McEnaney for example, even in the days long before his brother took over as manager of the county McEnaney was always good to Meath down through the years, one particular AI final comes to mind.

Mick Collins eh? yet another two fingers pointed directly at us Royals this seasons by the spineless pencil pushers at HQ. First Syl Doyle, then Farrells suspension, then Deegan (who disappointingly enough for them had a decent game) and now what could well be the final insult of our season, the dreaded Collins! All this because they were the ones who were too gutless to deal with last years leinster final fiasco and so dumped it on our doorstep, ridiculous carry on!

Gammy, I actually though reading the frist couple of lines of your post that "Hey here's a sensible post from Gammy" but alas you had to get the little subtle dig at Meath.

I really have to be careful, little subtle digs I'll get away with most likely, however if I go straight in for the jugular they'll no doubt be whinging and crying amass from the Meath ranks with many of ye calling for my head..... AGAIN ;)

Right so Collins had a bad match ten years ago.
He must have dome something right in the mean time to still be operating at this level.
Cop on lads it's not the Meath way to make excuses before a match.
There are some out there who sport green and gold colours who sadly blame the referee for everything.
Look at it this way there generally speaking are no bad players at county level.
Is that fair comment.
However some players at county level turn in bad performances.
Agreed?
That does NOT make them bad footballers, the same applies to referees, they don't make that level unless they are bloody good, but admittedly they can have bad days.
Then again John Bannon did his level best over the years to prove my argument wrong !!!!

Thought he was retired, obviously still hates us since 87 & 88.remember him putting hank traynor off for nothing in the all ireland q/f replay against westmeath early in the 1st half.def worth 3 points to galway.

Meath were well and truely outclassed on the 01 final, nothing to do with the ref
