Best club players who never played for Meath!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Noticed a thread on the Kildare page re best club footballers who never played for the County.Probably best to keep it to the last 20 years and guys who never played Senior Championship as there are a few who might have played the odd League match or challenge without ever establishing themselves. Can think of a few straight away,
Ronan Farrelly (Oldcastle)
George Beirne ( Blackhall)
Gareth Mc Guinness( Walterstown)
Tony Cunningham ( Duleek)
Paul Gilsenan ( Trim)
Gavin Farrelly( Nobber)
John O Donoghue( Moynalvey)
All of these guys are still playing I think and all played underage for the County.Probably too late for them now but they were all good players and should have played Senior at some stage.Any other suggestions?

George Beirne ( Blackhall), A cert, a great player just came at the wrong timing, Fay was in his prime and i dont think he wanted to commit knowing ur on the bench, then kevin reilly came along, would still be good enough and is only late 20's. Prob the best reader of a game in the county

Damien Sweeney( Dunboyne) good enough to play full back or centre, big strong and knew how to mix it.

Paddy Smith, enough said

Agree with Gareth McGuinness, good solid footballer who no forwards in club football like marking

Boots96.Didn't remember John O Donoghue playing under Eamon Barry.Never suggested to know everything.Just from memory these were guys who stood out at underage.Thought George Beirne would make a half back rather than a full back. There are plenty more who for whatever reason didnt realise their potential or were not given a chance.Tadhg Brosnan could also be included although he seemed to get chances.

That little Flyer of a wing back from Donaghmore Ashbourne
Tony Cunningham

Micky Lowther
Skryne centre half back
Mairtin Doran
Alan Reynolds

LOL Dont get mad at me for picking so many O mahonies players but all of the our lads i have named are cracking players and young also with time to improve. Of all of the above i would say that Ian Davis should definately be picked. He has been exceptional for Skryne this year. The centre back for them whose name escapes me has to have a chance. I would love if he were a small bit more imposing if he is to play centre haf back for us.

James T a few of those names have played for Meath for example Tadg Brosnan and some of them will be getting a run next year, for example Ian Daves and Ciaran Lenehan because both of them were at a trial there 2 weeks ago. Ye Eoin Carrol would have been good enough and his brother Alan Carrol.

Most of the names mentioned by James T wouldnt get a kick in a junior team. Some real footballers who never got the break..
Tom Halpin (St Michaels)
Martin Crosbie ( The Wood)
Lynch ( Ballinlough)
Finnegan ( Senchalstown)
Larry McCormack ( The Wood)
Kealys ( Dunshaughlin)
Mick O dowd (skyrne)

All the above players offered greatly to club and underage co football, Halpin is the only player in Ireland with 3 provincial u21 titles.
As for the likes of Brosnan, O'Donughue etc bening mentioned every year along with poor NOM's players who are currently making the meath panels is the reason we are were we are.

Northmeathman did Larry McCormack not get a run with Meath. I thought I rwemembered him getting his jaw broken in Castleblanen or am I mixing him up with a different Wood player. Think I also saw him come on in a Leinster championship match in Portlaois. Certainly Mick O' Dowd got a short run with the Meath team.

Brian Smyth of Skryne. Was in the same class in school as Paddy Reynolds and Brian was head and shoulders above Paddy. He was also instrumental for Skryne during the late 90s and early 2000s'

Tony Cunningham of Duleek was mentioned as well and would have to second him.

Davis from Skryne as well based on what I saw of him this year.

There was also a guy called Flynn who used to play with Bellewstown in the 80s and 90s who made the junior team but was a great midfielder. No idea what his first name was.
