The problem with Gerry Cooney is that most people have never heard of him until he got nominated for the Meath job.

Sean Boylan wouldn't have been too well known in footballing circles before his managment tenure.

But I understand what your saying & these are different times. But cooneys anonymity shouldn't go against him.
I think things have to be weighed up & balanced out. The manager shouldn't be picked because he's cheaper, or better known or lives in a certain place. He should be picked because he's the best man to bring Meath Football forward.

agree 100% with jinxie, the best man for the job has to get it and not appoint someone who might keep certain delegates happy.

Scarraboy has some ideas of meath football but really o malley wasn't that bad a footballer my father played for the cills at the time and he was nearly as good as o malley but I never heard of anyone call him a legend even around Bettystown Also people saying that they never heard of Gerry Cooney an ex meath footballer so you are in no position to criticise scarra boy Also I agree that a meathman should get the job as manager

Different game, different era. Don't know Cooney, but what has he done of late in terms of coaching/managing? Is this the Co. Board blundering along...again??!

Hungrymeathman - To be fair I dont recall too many people saying that they hadn't heard of Gerry Cooney. Most Meath fans of a certain vintage, would know of Gerry and his Meath career (and the younger posters could be excused for not knowing him so well - he is not one of the names that would be passed down from generation to generation in the same way that the names of Paddy O'Brien or Jack Quinn or Pat Collier or Mick Lyons would be).
I think most posters (myself included) are not familiar with his managerial career. Which is not entirely surprising as he hasn't exactly set the managerial world alight. That is not to say he wouldn't do a good job with Meath though - many a good club manager has failed at county level and vice versa.

Gerry Cooney should be givin a chance and with a decent back line coach either Fay or Harnan we should be still playing at the business end of things come next August.
Just a note on the real legends from East Meath there were only B Flynn and Pat Collier. really not an area for producing real legends or footballers

Could I plead with everyone not to bother reponding to this fool. Seriously, it only encourages the likes of him/her and you end up with nonsense threads like the Oldcastle one. Lets all agree just to ignore WUMs like this and get on with discussing the real issues of Meath football.

O Malley must come close to being the best corner back ever, certainly the best in my time watching football?

it was between o malley and enda colleran for the corner back spot in the team off the millennium .o malley was very unlucky not to get on to that team .colleran was the captain off the the galway team the year they won the 3 in row so that proabably gave him the vote over o malley

I hear that they are in the process of building a monument to O malley over in Bettystown and there is going to be a east Meath national day for him so I hope all his fans will be there to adore their own legend
