Banty for Meath Job

'In my opinion O Malley was only a hand passer of the ball and lucky he was surrounded by Lyons and Harnan he wouldn't get into the top ten backs of the present time'

Jaysus Scarraboy, stop embarrassing yourself will you. O'Malley was one of the best corner backs to ever play the game and was well recognised as such.
Whether or not he can coach is another matter but please stop showing your ignorance with regard to his playing ability.

O Malley probably one of the best corner backs i have ever seen, a legend and example to anyone playing football. Can people please get it into their heads that a manger regrdless who he is can only work with the players available to him and will not guarantee success alone. Does anyone on here believe (regardless who is in charge) that meath are realistic all ireland contenders.......given the draw for leinster, and that should be meaths target(not another dead end in the qualifiers) we will do well to get past Wicklow/Kildare. I would like to see banty get the gig but i dont buy into the hype that just because you have what is widely regarded as a top management team, they will bring silverware, it is down to the players and we do simply not compare to Cork/Kerry at the moment

Only time will tell how Meath will do next year but they were a poor enough outfit this year all because their backs were at times only third rate. Well I suppose O Malley was a bit above average in his playing days but who knows if some of the people who think he was the best thing since sliced pan were on a selection panel for the Meath Team of the past fifty years he might make it and now its getting like if anyone wears a Meath jersey he is described a a legend

Good to see the current poll is reflecting the 4 remaining contenders...oh, hang on...

I think that Meath should stick with a Meathman and if the county board vets the new managers backroom staff we should be on the way to becoming a football force in the years to come. Any chance for Harnan to jump ship at this time.

You obviously don't watch much Gaelic Football and clearly never say O'Malley play. Over the past 30 years O'Malley has been without peer in the corner back position and was nominated alongside Enda Colleran of Galway as being the greatest ever right-full-back on the team of the Millennium. You could not have embarrassed yourself any worse with that contribution.

My first post ever in anger and disbelief. Knocking Robbie O'Malley as just a handpasser of the ball and you trust this
current county board ?

seemingly gerry cooney has darren fay, finian murtagh and andy mcentee on his ticket for the meath job.they certainly have experience but i still agree with liam harnan that meath should go against tradition and appoint an outside man.gerry cooney is only assistant manager with ashbourne which hardly gives him sufficient inter county managing experience, the inclusion of fay could be his trump card though and the 2 others would have a good knowledge of the club scene but i think this current panel needs to start from scratch with a manager who carries no baggage.

Jesus Scarraboy I think you should retire before your posting career comes to a sorry end, any Meath man who makes comments like yours about O'Malley has to have his loyalties and indeed common sense questioned.

I also heard that they dont want to give it to McEeaney because he is going to cost to much money and they dont like Liam Harnan.I wouldn't be happy if Cooney got the job because not many have heard of him.He was selector with Ashbourne this year and he lives in South Dublin. Pat Coyle is in with a strong shout aswell. I would be very dissappionted and angry if they dont appoint McEeaney because of money.

A big name is just that a big name, no guarantees, Pat Gilroy hadn't much experience before his appointment. Everyone has to start somewhere

Well no county should be held to ransom over a managers wage. But the county board should also be appointing the best man for the job, not the cheapest.

Sure plenty of know alls in Meath football circles making legends of everyone who wore a Meath jersey I think if one looks back at the video evidence of the two all Irelands which he received medals for, it's all there to seen that O Malley was like a dancer with two left feet he could never kich a ball only a hand flicker. Anyway to bring Meath football to the next level a native Meathman should be appointed to the post of new manager either Eamon O Brien or Gerry Cooney would have Meath Football at heart and with a solid backroom team sure to take Meath forward.

The problem with Gerry Cooney is that most people have never heard of him until he got nominated for the Meath job.

It is all well and good to say that money should not stand in the way of picking the best manager but if we have not got the money then we just cant do it. GAA in Meath is bigger then the county team. Facilities need to be developed and kids need to be coached. I dont see the wisdom in throwing money into mercenary managers and fitness coaches unless you are pretty sure it will pay off. With Mc Enaney, Im not convinced the end will justify the means
